  • Beyond tenant refusal

Open Access•Claire McCamley, Philip Brown et al.•ARTICLE•Energy Research & Social Science•2026

Decarbonising the United Kingdom's housing stock is a critical component of government strategy to achieve net zero by 2050, and social housing providers have a significant role in delivering the energy retrofit measures necessary to achieve this aim. However, social housing tenants retain the right to refuse retrofit measures, and tenant refusal remains a significant and ongoing barrier to successful retrofit delivery. Research on barriers to re…

  • Resignifying Gender

Open Access•Shenaz Rangwala, Chanaka Jayawardhena et al.•ARTICLE•Gender Work and Organization•2025•References: 24

This work explores the dynamic interplay of gender and consumption among middle‐class women in post‐liberalization India. Through thirty‐three semi‐structured interviews, it examines how Indian women reshape gender norms in the context of self, family, and society, revealing the interplay between work and consumption serving as a medium for asserting autonomy while concurrently reinforcing traditional gender roles. Utilizing Judith Butler's gende…

  • Traversing shrines

    Open Access•Toni Eagar, Shona Bettany•ARTICLE•Annals of Tourism Research•2025•References: 40

This paper explores the traversing shrine Pooh Bear's Corner as a dynamic place of power arising from pauses in travel dedicated to the act of traversing. Using a boundary work lens we examine how modalities of pausing—taking pause, giving pause, and making pause—create significant orientation points within journeys. Through interviews and field research, the study captures the narratives of travellers, highlighting the site's role in enriching t…

  • Exploring the Role UK Grandfathers Play in Parenting Culture

Open Access•Ben Kerrane, Katy Kerrane et al.•ARTICLE•Sociology•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 36

Grandparents play an increasingly active caregiving role in contemporary family life. However, specific exploration of grandfatherhood and its practice is rare. This article explores how intensive parenting norms inform men's performance of grandfathering in the United Kingdom, with ageing offering men a 'second chance' to (grand)parent in ways qualitatively different from fathering. In-depth interviews with UK grandfathers revealed that while th…

  • Othering’ the unprepared

Open Access•Ben Kerrane, Katy Kerrane et al.•ARTICLE•Gender Work and Organization•2023•References: 9

We explore the foodwork performed by white middle‐class mothers in the United Kingdom who were preparing to feed their families in anticipation of post‐Brexit resource scarcity. We illustrate their laborious preparations (‘prep‐work’) as they stockpiled items (mostly food) in anticipation of shortages. We reveal tensions in how they envisaged how (and who) to feed. Analysis reveals how our (privileged, white middle‐class) participants enrolled ‘g…

  • Feminist academic organizations

Open Access•L Gurrieri, Andrea Prothero et al.•ARTICLE•Gender Work and Organization•2022•Cited by: 9•References: 22

This paper examines the establishment of a feminist academic organization, GENMAC (Gender, Markets, and Consumers; genmac.co), serving gender scholars in business schools and related fields. In so doing, it builds on the emerging literature of feminist academic organizations, as situated within feminist organizational studies (FOS). Through a feminist case study and by assessing the reflections of GENMAC's board members, we tell the story of the …

  • (Invisible) Displays of Survivalist Intensive Motherhood among UK Brexit Preppers

Open Access•Ben Kerrane, Katy Kerrane et al.•ARTICLE•Sociology•2021•Cited by: 7•References: 30

This article explores mothers' narratives of 'prepping' behaviours. Prepping involves the management of stockpiled household items in anticipation of marketplace disruption. In this article, we use anticipated food shortages following the UK's exit from the EU ('Brexit') as our context. Drawing on interview data, we highlight how mothers embed prepping into their ongoing pursuit of intensive motherhood, bound in the highly gendered practice of fe…

  • Disney discourses of self and Other

    Shona Bettany, Russell William Belk•ARTICLE•Consumption Markets & Culture•2011•Cited by: 9•References: 21

We need Otherness to define self. As our world widens in an age of global commerce, travel, and entertainment, we encounter a sometimes bewildering array of Otherness delivered at an ever‐increasing pace. In light of postmodern diversity and hybridity, we need increasingly fundamental Others against whom to construct ourselves. In the theme parks typified by those of Disney in Orlando, Florida, we find several discourses that offer us a perspecti…
