On January 4, 2001, in Bogota, Colombia, the authors issued a self-described `manifesto' 1 to Colombian scholars inviting them to rescue local values of self-esteem and creativity and to resist intellectual colonialism by European and North American colleagues. After months of discussion, they decided to revise the document and publish an expanded text. Eyebrows were raised not only because this is an interdisciplinary document (signed by a biolo…

PAR claims inspiration from phenomenological and Marxist trends adjusted to regional realities and factors; it challenges established academic routines without discarding the need to accumulate and systematise knowledge, and to con…

The story of fray pedro de aguado, O.F.M., and his work is not a happy one. He was a humble friar who had spent the best years of his life in the New Kingdom of Granada preaching to the Indians. He had also taken the pains of gathering material for the writing of a history of the area with which he was acquainted. Back in Spain in 1576 as a representative of his province, Aguado completed the writing, went through the endless protocols, submitted…

  • "Odyssey of a Sixteenth-Century Document-Fray Pedro de Aguado's "Recopilacion Historial

    Orlando Fals-Borda, Orlando Fals-Rorda•ARTICLE•Hispanic American Historical Review•1955

THE PUBLICATION of a book in Spain during the sixteenth century practically had all the characteristics of the heroic. A keen process of competition among would-be authors, censors, and printers seems to have taken place, while little tangible encouragement was found in official circles. Only those authors succeeded who were able to endure the many trials of the publishing process, and to overcome the physical, intellectual, financial, and bureau…
