A Cross-National Study on Prosocial Behaviors in Emerging Adulthood During the Covid-19 Pandemic
Emerging adulthood is marked by changes and exploration of life directions and is significantly impacted by crises like the COVID-19 pandemic. This cross-national study examined the psychological, relational, and contextual factors associated with prosocial behaviors— adherence to COVID-19 measures and helping strangers—among emerging adults (ages 18–25) from 14 countries during the pandemic. We assessed empathy, social identification with those …
Parenting, Gender, and Perception of Changes in Children’s Behavior during the Covid-19 Pandemic
In a previous Argentine study, we found that, in the critical context of social isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic, there were changes in maternal practices that influenced the relationship with their children. We also found that the impact of mandatory isolation was moderated positively by protective factors such as positive parenting and maternal school support or negatively by risk factors such as maternal stress. Although this study only …
The varying roles of parents and the cognitive–emotional variables regarding the different types of adolescent prosocial behavior
This article studies the relationship between parental variables (authoritative parental style, maternal and paternal challenges), empathy, and prosocial flow with different types of prosocial behaviors (prosocial behaviors toward different targets and different motivations of prosocial behavior). The sample included 539 students of both sexes (42.5% males; M age = 19.13 years old, SD = 1.92). The hierarchical multiple regression analyses indicat…
The Hero program
This article has a dual purpose. First, it proposes to investigate adolescents' opinion and acceptance of the new online program called "Hero." Second, this article studies the program's effectiveness in promoting prosocial behavior. The sample included 51 men and women participants between the ages of 12 and 16 (average age 15.02; SD = 1.07; 49% men). All of the adolescents attended high school and belonged to a middle socioeconomic status. The …
Parental Expectations and Prosocial Behavior of Adolescents From Low-Income Backgrounds
Parental expectations are influenced by cultural models, which in turn are subject to a great influence from historically fluctuating features of the socioeconomic background. Parental expectations seem to be linked to children's social and emotional development in terms of empathy and prosocial behavior. The current study aims to (a) compare low-income adolescents' perceptions of parental expectations of prosocial and antisocial behavior across …
Contributions to the study and promotion of resilience in socially vulnerable children
Young children are particularly susceptible to the adverse effects of social vulnerability. Resilient children are those who resist adversity, manage to cope with uncertainty, and are able to recover successfully from trauma. Becoming familiar with the characteristics of naturally resilient children allows preventive intervention policies to be designed. Given that resilience interventions are an integrative process, it is necessary to work in di…
Analysis of Dimensions of Prosocial Behavior in an Argentinean Sample of Children
This study assessed how many motivational factors were required to explain scores for prosocial behavior, as measured by the Spanish version of the prosocial tendencies measure. A sample of 472 middle class children and adolescents, both sexes, from Buenos Aires, Argentina, completed the prosocial tendencies measure. This instrument presents prosocial behavior in six types: altruistic, compliant, emotional, public, anonymous, and dire. However, t…

Stressful Situations and Coping Strategies in Relation to Age
Whether people cope differently with negative events at different ages was assessed by relation to age by type of situation perceived as potentially stressful and by type of coping strategy used, and also whether the kind of coping strategy used to reduce the potential stressor was related to type of stressor. To do this the factor structure of the Spanish version of the Ways of Coping Checklist of Lazarus and Folkman was examined in an Argentine…
Effect of Inapplicable Items in the Factor Structure of the Spanish Version of the Ways of Coping Questionnaire
The aim of this work was to examine how the presence of inapplicable items might change the factor structure of the 1984 Ways of Coping Questionnaire by Lazarus and Folkman. The Spanish version of the Ways of Coping Questionnaire was administered to 156 subjects with university degrees. The 95 women and 61 men whose ages were from 18 and 45 years (M = 27.8, SD = 12.1) were of middle socioeconomic status. All were residents of Buenos Aires. To stu…
