Socialization, Culture and Ecology in the Development of Group and Sex Differences in Cognitive Style
An overview is given of the theory of psychological differentiation and particularly of its field-dependence-independence cognitive-style component. Recent cross-cultural research on the roles of child-rearing, culture and ecology in the development of individual, group and sex differences in cognitive style is reviewed
Psychological differentiation: Current status
The status of the differentiation hypothesis, derived from differentiation theory, is examined in light of the evidence that has accumulated since the hypothesis was proposed a decade and a half ago. Assuming that greater or less differentiation is an organismic attribute, the hypothesis postulates that behaviors reflecting extent of differentiation are likely to be interrelated, making for self-consistency in individual functioning across domain…
Field-Dependent and Field-Independent Cognitive Styles and Their Educational Implications
Field dependence and interpersonal behavior
People with a field-dependent or field-independent cognitive style are different in their interpersonal behavior in ways predicted from the theory of psychological differentiation. Field-dependent people make greater use of external social referents, but only when the situation is ambiguous and these referents provide information that helps remove the ambiguity; field-independent people function with greater autonomy from others under such condit…
Psychological differentiation as a factor in conflict resolution
Previous studies have shown that persons matched in level of differentiation are likely to develop greater interpersonal attraction in the course of an interaction than are mismatched persons. These studies were all conducted in situations where the interacting persons were working toward a common goal. To test the hypothesis that situational variables may moderate match-mismatch effects, the present study investigated these affects when the inte…
Psychological Differentiation in Cross-Cultural Perspective
Cross-cultural studies of psychological differentiation are reviewed with the objectives of: examining the applicability, across cultures, of the main propositions of differentiation theory and the generality of its intracultural supporting data; identifying extensions of the theory, and of its empirical base, suggested by the cross-cultural findings; and delineating problems in the existing data and useful lines of further cross-cultural inquiry…

Longitudinal study of development of the body concept
Development of differentiati on, as reflected in articulation of body concept, was studied longitudinally by means of human figure drawings in two groups of males and females, at ages 8 and 13 in one group, 10, 14, 17, and 24 in another. Articulation-of-body-concept (ABC) scores increased between ages 8 and 14, with little change thereafter. At the same time, subjects showed marked individual stability in ABC scores, even over a 14-year span. The…
