Mapping with Macro X-ray Fluorescence Scanning of Raffaello’s Portrait of Leo X
Raffaello is renowned as one of the Old Renaissance Masters and his paintings and painting technique are famous for the details and naturality of the characters. Raffaello is famous in particular for the then-new technique of oil painting, which he mastered and perfected. On the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the death of Raffaello (2020), there was a large exhibition at the Scuderie del Quirinale in Rome, where many paintings and drawings …
A Simple and Effective Removal Procedure of Synthetic Resins to Obtain Accurate Radiocarbon Dates of Restored Artworks
The issue of contamination in radiocarbon dating is well known and can affect not only archaeological findings but also artworks. In the latter case, a possible source of contamination is represented by the products used during the restoration, e.g. resins of synthetic origin like the well-known Paraloid, applied to wood artifacts as a strengthening and preserving agent. In the case of incomplete removal prior to dating, the resins produce an app…
Optical Detection of Radiocarbon Dioxide
The first results of an optical method for measuring radiocarbon concentrations, based on mid-infrared laser spectroscopy of a carbon dioxide gas sample, are presented with the theoretical bases explained in detail. The first measurements on modern and highly enriched samples show the extreme linearity of this technique over more than 5 decades. An intercomparison with accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) is performed both for modern and 14 C-dead…
Collagen Quality Indicators for Radiocarbon Dating of Bones
Radiocarbon dating of bones can be very useful in archaeological contexts, especially when dealing with funerary deposits lacking material culture, e.g. pottery vessels. 14 C measurements of bone samples are usually performed on the extracted collagen residue. The content and the quality of collagen can vary significantly, mainly depending on bone preservation and diagenesis. Generally speaking, environmental conditions such as low pH level of so…
Status of Sample Combustion and Graphitization Lines at INFN-Labec, Florence
Since installation of the new accelerator at INFN-LABEC in Florence in 2004, the workload has progressively increased in the radiocarbon dating laboratory, requiring a faster sample preparation throughput and greater versatility to allow for a larger variety of treated materials. The “standard” sample preparation line is based on an elemental analyzer (EA) for the combustion of the pretreated samples, and a vacuum line where the CO 2 is collected…
The Artemidorus Papyrus
Ancient papyrus manuscripts are one of the most fascinating sources for reconstructing not only ancient life habits but also past literature. Recently, an amazing document has come to the fore due to the heated debates it raised: the so-called Artemidorus papyrus. It is a very long scroll (about 2.5 m) composed of several fragments of different sizes, with inscriptions and drawings on both sides. On the recto of the document, a text about geograp…
A Beam Profile Monitor for Rare Isotopes in Accelerator Mass Spectrometry
In accelerator systems, beam lines are generally equipped with diagnostic elements, such as Faraday cups and beam profile monitors (BPM), to optimize beam transport. These diagnostic elements, or at least commercial ones, are designed to only work with continuous beams, and their typical maximum sensitivity is about few tens of pA. Thus, in the case of diagnosis of rare isotope beams in accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS), Faraday cups and BPMs a…
Non-destructive characterization of Della Robbia sculptures at the Bargello museum in Florence by the combined use of Pixe and XRF portable systems
