Visual Patterns of Attention in Prehistoric Central Germany: An Eye-tracking Study on Pottery Styles
Stylistic variation has been a central concern in the study of prehistoric pottery in central Europe. In this paper, we approach stylistic variation from a visual cognition perspective, focusing on the effects that stylistic attributes of vessels have on patterns of attention. A free-viewing eye-tracking experiment was conducted using pottery vessels from central Germany spanning from 5500 to 1 bce . Our results show that, among modern observers,…
A guide to the mechanisms of transformation: The role of materials in cognitive change
Despite the clear divisions in current archaeological theories, in the last 30 years a 'new consensus' is emerging; this is the recognition that materials can actively shape human behaviour and cognition. While this recognition offers major opportunities for explaining changes in the archaeological record without just succumbing to individual simplistic models - such as migration or diffusion, or acculturation or convergence - there is still a ne…
An Early Neolithic ‘cracking technology: Assessing the thermal shock behaviour of organic-tempered low-fired ceramics
Unravelling ancient drilling techniques: A case of pottery repair in the Early European Neolithic
Photogrammetric techniques detected diagnostic traces of drilling procedures. • Mixed use of drilling techniques for pottery repair observed at Méhtelek-Nádas. • Preference for repairing small or medium-sized open vessels unveils a regime of value. • Evidence of technical adaptation to vessels' damage state
Outline of a theory of breakage
Much of the debate in archaeological theory throughout the last decades has revolved around challenging problematic humanist principles that have shaped our discipline, particularly the idea that humans are masters over nature. Postprocessualists sought, among other things, to emancipate the human condition from this essentialist claim in part by exposing the historical and cultural situatedness of this humanist principle - an epistemological end…
Sin retorno. Sujetos/objetos partidos
Working with broken agents: Exploring computational 2D morphometrics for studying the (post)depositional history of potsherds
Quick and dirty? A systematic review of the use of rapid ethnographies in healthcare organisation and delivery
Destruction and abandonment practices at La Rinconada, Ambato Valley (Catamarca, Argentina)
