  • From rational to relational

    Open Access•Pepa Ambrosio-Albalá, Lucie Middlemi et al.•ARTICLE•Energy Research & Social Science•2020•Citada por: 6•Referências: 17

In the sociological tradition, markets are understood to be constituted of social relations: relations of trust, friendship, power and dependence, which have moral and emotional qualities. In this paper, we explore how people in energy poor households construct the energy market and its impact on energy policy. Drawing on secondary analysis of a large collection of qualitative interviews on the lived experience of energy poverty carried out from …

  • Post-disciplinary realism

    Nick Emmel•ARTICLE•International Journal of Social…•2020•Citada por: 2•Referências: 9

In this paper, I elaborate a realist post-disciplinary methodology. Its starting point are disciplines. Some features of disciplines are well understood. But the implications of their irreducibility to mechanical procedure is rarely acknowledged. Building on this observation this paper proceeds through investigating transdisciplinary methodologies. First science as usual in which disciplines are the building blocks of interdisciplinary science, a…

    Open Access•Lucie Middlemi, Pepa Ambrosio-Albalá et al.•ARTICLE•Energy Research & Social Science•2019•Citada por: 36•Referências: 9

Energy poverty is widely understood to be a complex and multi-faceted problem, with a range of drivers. In thispaper we draw on secondary qualitative data on energy poverty from the UK, as well as conceptual thinkinginformed by the capabilities approach, to explore a previously understudied facet of energy poverty: socialrelations. We focus particularly on how relationships with family, friends, agencies and distant others impact onpeople’s abili…

  • "Who Will Marry a Diseased Girl?" Marriage, Gender, and Tuberculosis Stigma in Asia

    Open Access•Bethan Hatherall, James N Newell et al.•ARTICLE•Qualitative Health Research•2019•Citada por: 2•Referências: 29

In a qualitative study on the stigma associated with tuberculosis (TB), involving 73 interviews and eight focus groups conducted in five sites across three countries (Bangladesh, Nepal, and Pakistan), participants spoke of TB's negative impact on the marriage prospects of women in particular. Combining the approach to discovering grounded theory with a conceptualization of causality based on a realist ontology, we developed a theory to explain th…

  • Empowerment in the Relational Longitudinal Space of Vulnerability

    Open Access•Nick Emmel•ARTICLE•Social Policy and Society•2017•Citada por: 8•Referências: 5

The term vulnerability has little theoretical purchase in social policy. It is used widely as a short-hand phrase to describe deficit. As such, it provides only limited value and has little regard for the wider structures of society that might ameliorate, sustain or exacerbate vulnerability. There is, however, a critical literature that seeks to understand the social, economic and political relationships that produce vulnerability and its potenti…

  • Exercising moral agency in the contexts of objective reality

Open Access•Yana Manyukhina, Nick Emmel et al.•ARTICLE•Journal for the Theory of Social…•2017•Citada por: 1•Referências: 43

This paper engages with two contrasting approaches to conceptualising and studying consumer behaviour that appear to dominate existing research on consumption. On one hand, agency‐focused perspectives take an individual consumer to be the primary author of practice and a basic unit of analysis. On the other hand, socio‐centric paradigms focus on the social roots of consumption activities and the wider societal contexts in which they take place. T…

  • The Many Faces of Vulnerability

Open Access•Kate Brown, Kathryn Ecclestone et al.•ARTICLE•Social Policy and Society•2017•Citada por: 91•Referências: 10

Social injustices, structural and personal crises as well as intensifying stress on some citizens seem increasing preoccupations in contemporary society and social policy. In this context, the concept of vulnerability has come to play a prominent role in academic, governmental and everyday accounts of the human condition. Policy makers and practitioners are now concerned with addressing vulnerability through an expansive range of interventions. A…

    Open Access•Nick Emmel•ARTICLE•International Journal of Social…•2015•Citada por: 5•Referências: 3

  • Using indigenous proverbs to understand social knowledge and attitudes to leprosy among the Yoruba of southwest Nigeria

Bassey Ebenso, Gbenga Adeyemi et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of African Cultural Studies•2012•Referências: 20

Following a systematic analysis of 23 proverbs obtained from ethnographic research and from literature searches, this article presents the cultural knowledge and attitudes about leprosy in Yorubaland, southwest Nigeria. Our analysis indicates that contrary to fragmentary evidence portraying Yoruba attitudes to leprosy as entirely negative, there is a mixed pattern of social responses to leprosy which range from drastic exclusion to empathy and ac…

  • Accessing Socially Excluded People - Trust and the Gatekeeper in the Researcher-Participant Relationship

    Open Access•Nick Emmel, K Hughes et al.•ARTICLE•Sociological Research Online•2007•Citada por: 31•Referências: 13

This paper describes methodological findings from research to recruit and research hard-to-reach socially excluded people. We review the ways in which researchers have used particular strategies to access hard-to-reach individuals and groups and note that little attention has been given to understanding the implications of the nature of the trust relationship between researcher and participant. Gatekeepers invariably play a role in accessing soci…

  • Preventing disease or helping the struggle for emancipation

    Jim Connelly, Nick Emmel•ARTICLE•Policy & Politics•2003•Citada por: 1

English The professional practice of public health can be understood to derive from two contrasting models – one which emphasises epidemiology and evidence from randomised trials and sees effective preventive treatments and interventions as its major purpose, the other which derives its methods from critical social science and sees empowerment, materialist analysis, and emancipatory action as its main purpose. These two models are compared and co…
