  • Photographs as narratives in social science research

    Open Access•Malavika Karlekar•ARTICLE•Contributions to Indian Sociology•2025

It is only over the last three decades that sociology and social anthropology have taken seriously the photograph, its neglect due in part to methodological issues. In this paper, I look at how these visual narratives are to be viewed, understood and interpreted by the researcher, leading to conundrums of subject position, verisimilitude of an image and indeed, availability of visual material. My reading of photographs has led me to the conclusio…

  • A Photographer’s Muse

    Open Access•Malavika Karlekar•ARTICLE•Indian Journal of Gender Studies•2025

In this article, I examine the role of the photograph in the life of the well-known painter, Amrita Sher-Gil. As, from an early age, she was the photographer’s willing muse, an analysis of a selection of images helps in the construction of another narrative, one that is distinct from her art, and might even be contrary to the aura that surrounds artists of her calibre. I look at cameos of her brief, yet complex life as seen by her photographer-fa…

Through an analysis of her writings, the paper is able to gain insights into an important segment of Beng…

Nineteenth-century Bengal was a period of change, conflict and accommodation both among the bhadralok - literally translated to mean the gentle folk, the middle classes - as well as between them and the British rulers. The world view of the bhadralok and its search for a new paradigm had its material basis in changes in existing land relations, the emergence of the market and of urban spaces as well as the spread of education and literacy. Often …
