Do children better understand adults or themselves? An acoustic and perceptual study of the complex sibilant system of Polish
This paper reports a developmental production-perception study of the three-way Polish sibilant contrast /s, ʂ, ɕ/ in typically developing children (N = 76). Children aged 2;11–7;11 produced words with sibilants in word-medial and initial position. They then identified the same words they produced, and the words as produced by an unknown adult female. Results show higher identification accuracy for adult productions across all ages. Production an…
A Longitudinal Study of Speech Acoustics in Older French Females: Analysis of the Filler Particle euh across Utterance Positions
Aging in speech production is a multidimensional process. Biological, cognitive, social, and communicative factors can change over time, stay relatively stable, or may even compensate for each other. In this longitudinal work, we focus on stability and change at the laryngeal and supralaryngeal levels in the discourse particle euh produced by 10 older French-speaking females at two times, 10 years apart. Recognizing the multiple discourse roles o…
Item repetition and response deadline affect familiarity and recollection differently across childhood
The aim was to examine how item repetition at encoding and response deadline at retrieval affect familiarity and recollection in 5-, 7-, or 11-year-old children (N = 156). Familiarity and recollection were estimated using a process dissociation paradigm. Direct comparison of the effects of repetition under unlimited and limited response time revealed a dissociation of familiarity and recollection. The recollection was both boosted (via repetition…
Arthur S. Abramson
Arthur S. Abramson D. H. Whalen and Laura L. Koenig Arthur S. Abramson, former Secretary, Vice President, and President (1983) of the Linguistic Society of America, died on December 15, 2017, at the age of ninety-two.1 He was a central figure in the linguistic study of tone, voicing, voice quality, and duration, primarily in their phonetic realization. His seminal work with Leigh Lisker (Lisker & Abramson 1964) introduced the metric voice onset t…
