Breaking Down Silos in Treating Cardiovascular and Cancer-Related PTSD
Both cardiovascular events and cancer can lead to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms. This article compares the prevalence, risk factors, correlates, and consequences of disease-related PTSD symptoms in cardiac and cancer patients. The review supports the development of interventions that alleviate PTSD symptoms in adults with these conditions. Interoceptive bias (i.e., hypervigilance, misinterpretation, or heightened distress toward …
Prospective Bidirectional Relationship Between Sleep Duration and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Symptoms After Suspected Acute Coronary Syndrome
OBJECTIVE: Sleep disturbance is a "hallmark" symptom of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Poor sleep (including short sleep) after combat-related trauma can also predict subsequent PTSD. Less is known about the association between sleep duration and PTSD symptoms when PTSD is induced by acute coronary syndrome (ACS). We examined the bidirectional relationship between sleep duration and PTSD symptoms over the year after hospital evaluation for…
A population-based study of the intersection of sexual identity and race/ethnicity on physiological risk factors for CVD among U.S. adults (ages 18–59)
Objectives: Sexual minorities face significant psychosocial stressors (such as discrimination and violence) that impact their health. Several studies indicate that sexual minority women (SMW) and bisexual men may be at highest risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD), but limited research has examined physiological CVD risk or racial/ethnic differences. This study sought to examine racial/ethnic differences in physiological risk factors for CVD amon…
Effect of cohabiting partners on the development of posttraumatic stress symptoms after emergency department visits for stroke and transient ischemic attack
Psychological distress, coping behaviors, and preferences for support among New York healthcare workers during the Covid-19 pandemic
Anxiety Buffer Disruption: Self-Evaluation, Death Anxiety, and Stressor Appraisals Among Low and High Posttraumatic Stress Symptom Samples
Objective: Research driven by terror management theory suggests sociocultural anxiety-buffer systems typically protect against existential anxiety, whereas anxiety buffer disruption theory suggests traumatic experiences may disrupt that process. Method: Following posttraumatic stress (PTS) symptom screening (n = 4097), individuals with low (n = 149) and high (n = 120) PTS engaged in either negative or positive self-evaluations, then reported deat…
Short Sleep Duration After Hospital Evaluation for Acute Coronary Syndrome Is Associated With Increased Risk of 6-Month Readmission
OBJECTIVE: Hospital readmission after acute coronary syndrome (ACS) is associated with worsened patient outcomes and financial burden. Short sleep duration is a risk factor for cardiovascular events and may therefore represent a behavioral factor that increases risk of adverse posthospitalization outcomes. This study examined whether short sleep duration in the month after hospital evaluation for ACS is associated with 6-month all-cause emergency…
Ambulatory Blood Pressure Response to Romantic Partner Interactions and Long-Term Cardiovascular Health Outcomes
OBJECTIVE: Lower blood pressure (BP) during romantic partner interactions may underlie the association between romantic relationships and better long-term cardiovascular health. This secondary analysis examined the effect of momentary ambulatory BP (ABP) response to partner interactions on between-person changes in left ventricular mass index and mean systolic and diastolic BP over time. METHODS: Participants were 538 married, working adults (mea…
Duration of Perseverative Thinking as Related to Perceived Stress and Blood Pressure: An Ambulatory Monitoring Study
OBJECTIVE: Psychological distress may be intensified and prolonged by perseverative thinking (e.g., rumination, worry). The tendency to engage frequently in perseverative thinking has been linked to increased blood pressure (BP). Research is needed to investigate the physiological consequences of time spent perseverating by testing the momentary association between the duration of perseverative thinking and BP. The present study examines the exte…
Anxiety buffer disruption: Worldview threat, death thought accessibility, and worldview defense among low and high posttraumatic stress symptom samples
These findings supported the present hypotheses derived from anxiety buffer disruption theory, are important for understanding the existential dimension of posttraumatic stress, and may have implications for mental health. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2019 APA, all rights reserved)
Enduring somatic threat perceptions and post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms in survivors of cardiac events
Post-traumatic stress disorder due to acute cardiovascular events may be uniquely defined by enduring perceptions of somatic threat. We tested whether post-traumatic stress disorder at 1 month post-acute coronary syndrome indeed required both high peritraumatic threat during the acute coronary syndrome and ongoing cardiac threat perceptions. We assessed peritraumatic threat during emergency department enrollment of 284 patients with a provisional…
Prevalence of Illness-Induced Posttraumatic Stress Disorder in the United States
The main objective of this research is to determine the relationship between Price, Features, Brand Name, Brand Equity, Advertising and Satisfaction on Brand Loyalty among laptop users. The data was collected from 157 students in Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) through self-administered questionnaire. The data was analysed using the Correlation and Regression test. The findings shows that there is a positive significant relationship between these…
The Association of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder With Clinic and Ambulatory Blood Pressure in Healthy Adults
OBJECTIVE: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is associated with incident cardiovascular risk. We tested the association of PTSD with clinic and ambulatory blood pressure (ABP) in a sample of healthy participants and tested ABP reactivity to anxiety as a mechanism by which PTSD may influence blood pressure (BP). METHODS: Participants were originally enrolled during workplace BP screenings at three sites; approximately 6 years (standard deviatio…
A challenge for psychocardiology: Addressing the causes and consequences of patients’ perceptions of enduring somatic threat
The enduring somatic threat (EST) model of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) due to life-threatening medical events suggests that PTSD-like symptoms represent patients' sensitization to cues of ongoing threat in the body. In this article, we review research on the prevalence and consequences of such reactions in cardiovascular disease patients, discuss early tests of the EST model, and then report a new test of the EST model in 143 patients en…

Perceived Stress After Acute Myocardial Infarction: A Comparison Between Young and Middle-Aged Women Versus Men
OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to examine how psychological stress changes over time in young and middle-aged patients after experiencing an acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and whether these changes differ between men and women. METHODS: We analyzed data obtained from 2358 women and 1151 men aged 18 to 55 years hospitalized for AMI. Psychological stress was measured using the 14-item Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-14) at initial hospitalizati…
Risk for Incident Hypertension Associated With Posttraumatic Stress Disorder in Military Veterans and the Effect of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Treatment
OBJECTIVE: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) increases cardiovascular disease and cardiovascular mortality risk. Neither the prospective relationship of PTSD to incident hypertension risk nor the effect of PTSD treatment on hypertension risk has been established. METHODS: Data from a nationally representative sample of 194,319 veterans were drawn from the Veterans Administration (VA) roster of United States service men and women. This included…

State of the Art Review: Depression, Stress, Anxiety, and Cardiovascular Disease
The notion that psychological states can influence physical health is hardly new, and perhaps nowhere has the mind-body connection been better studied than in cardiovascular disease (CVD). Recently, large prospective epidemiologic studies and smaller basic science studies have firmly established a connection between CVD and several psychological conditions, including depression, chronic psychological stress, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), …
Self-Esteem and the Acute Effect of Anxiety on Ambulatory Blood Pressure
OBJECTIVES: Recent research suggests that self-esteem may be associated with improved parasympathetic nervous system functioning. This study tested whether high self-esteem is associated with decreased ambulatory systolic blood pressure (ASBP) reactivity to anxiety in healthy adults during the waking hours of a normal day. METHODS: Each of 858 participants completed a short version of the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale and then wore an ABP monitor t…
Vitamin D Supplementation for Depressive Symptoms: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to review the effects of vitamin D supplementation on depressive symptoms in randomized controlled trials. Although low vitamin D levels have been observationally associated with depressive symptoms, the effect of vitamin D supplementation as an antidepressant remains uncertain. METHODS: MEDLINE, CINAHL, AMED, PsycINFO, Scopus, The Cochrane Library, and references of included reports (through May 2013) were se…

Methods. A prospective cohort of ESRD patients (n = 391) treated at 9 hemodialysis centers in the New Orleans, Louisiana, area in the weeks before Hurricane Katrina were assessed for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression symptoms via telephone …
Spiritual Struggle and Adjustment to Loss in College Students: Moderation by Denomination
During their college years, students experience a variety of life transitions, including significant gains and losses. Spiritual transformations and struggles surrounding religious faith are also common during college. Despite its prominence, little is known about how spiritual struggle influences college students' adjustment to loss and whether the relationship differs by religious denomination. In a longitudinal study of college students dealin…
The Experience of Discrimination and Black-White Health Disparities in Medical Care
The current study of Black patients focuses on how discrimination contributes to racial disparities in health. The authors used a longitudinal methodology to study how perceived past discrimination affects reactions to medical interactions and adherence to physician recommendations. In addition, they explored whether these reactions and/or adherence mediate the relationship between discrimination and patients' health. The participants in this stu…
Trauma and Stress Response Among Hurricane Katrina Evacuees
Objectives. Hurricane Katrina’s impact on public health has been significant and multifaceted, with trauma-related psychological sequelae likely to result in a sizable burden of disease. Data were collected that assessed acute stress disorder (ASD) prevalence and factors related to ASD symptomatology among sheltered evacuees. Methods. On days 12 to 19 after Katrina, evacuees at a major emergency shelter completed surveys that assessed demographic…
Positive and Negative Health Behavior Changes in Cancer Survivors: A Stress and Coping Perspective
Cancer survivors often make health behavior changes in response to their increased risk for subsequent health problems. However, little is known about the mechanisms underlying these changes or whether they differ for positive and negative changes. This cross-sectional study applied a stress and coping model to examine both positive and negative health behavior changes in 250 middle-aged cancer survivors. A structural equation model showed that s…

Balance in pictures
Three experiments are reported on the phenomenon of the subjective balance of pictures. Subjects were asked to place a fulcrum beneath a picture so that it looked balanced. In Expt 1 reproductions of works of art were used as stimuli. Pictures showed large differences in balance point; subjects showed smaller differences, unrelated to handedness or eye-dominance. Monochrome reproductions produced similar balance scores to coloured reproductions. …

PTSD as meaning violation: Testing a cognitive worldview perspective
The cognitive perspective on post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has been successful in explaining many PTSD-related phenomena and in developing effective treatments, yet some of its basic assumptions remain surprisingly under-examined. The present study tested two of these assumptions: (1) situational appraisals of the event as violating global meaning (i.e., beliefs and goals) is related to PTSD symptomatology, and (2) the effect of situation…
Directionality of the Relationship Between Depressive Symptom Dimensions and C-Reactive Protein in Patients With Acute Coronary Syndromes
OBJECTIVE: Previous theoretical models predict that elevated inflammation may predict later depressive symptoms, but bidirectional associations are possible. We examined whether depressive symptoms or inflammation predicts change in the other for a 3-month period in a sample of adults with acute coronary syndromes (ACS). METHODS: During hospitalization for their index ACS event (baseline) and then again 1 and 3 months later, 163 post-ACS patients…
Trauma and PTSD symptoms: Does spiritual struggle mediate the link
Because exposure to potentially traumatic events is common (Kessler, Sonnega, Bromet, & Hughes, 1995), the mechanisms through which post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms develop is a critical area of investigation (Ozer, Best, Lipsey, & Weiss, 2003). Among the mechanisms that may predict PTSD symptoms is spiritual struggle, a set of negative religious cognitions related to understanding or responding to stressful events. Although promine…
