Expert providers implement integrated and coordinated care in opioid use disorder treatment
Through the adoption of these strategies, providers enhanced care accessibility, boosted patient engagement, sustained retention in treatment, and enhanced treatment outcomes. Even among highly skilled treatment providers in Los Angeles County, barriers to integrating and coordinating care using MOUD remain intricate and multifaceted. Addressing these challenges necessitates a comprehensive strategy involving provider education and training, incr…
Identifying gender differences in risk profiles and in opioid treatment outcomes in Los Angeles County
Policies and programs that aim to minimize wait time to enter opioid use disorder (OUD) treatment and maximize retention respond to potential differences in female and male clients' risk profiles. We conducted multigroup latent class analysis using significant individual risk factors. Our sample included 13,453 opioid treatment episodes from 135 unique substance use disorder treatment programs in Los Angeles County, California, in four waves: 201…

Electronic Cigarette Use and Associated Risk Factors in U.S.-Dwelling Pacific Islander Young Adults
Background: E-cigarette use is rapidly increasing among US young adults, heightening their risk for vaping-related illnesses. Yet, little is known about e-cigarette use among young adult Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders (NHPI): an indigenous-colonized US racial group rarely described in research literature. This exploratory study provides the first known data on e-cigarette use and potential risk factors in NHPI young adults. Method: Self-r…

Hazardous drinking, alcohol use disorders, and need for treatment among Pacific Islander young adults
Pacific Islander (PI) young adults are suspected to bear heavy risk for hazardous drinking, alcohol use disorders (AUD), and alcohol-related harms. Yet, PIs remain among the most understudied racial groups in the United States-creating a lack of empirical data documenting their alcohol use problems and treatment needs. The present study presents the first known data on PI young adults' hazardous drinking, possible AUDs, alcohol-related harms, and…
Program Capacity to Deliver Prevention Services to Children of Adult Clients Receiving Substance Use Disorder Treatment
Building Knowledge to Support Human Service Organizational and Management Practice: An Agenda to Address the Research-to-Practice Gap
Leaders of human service organizations (HSOs) face significant pressures from policymakers and funders to justify practices and ensure successful outcomes, an issue that has implications for social work practitioners and evidence-informed management practice. Although empirical research has advanced understanding of the factors that improve human service effectiveness and organizational improvement, considerable research-to-practice gaps exist an…
A Scientific Framework for Social Work Doctoral Education in the 21st Century
The emerging discourse about the science of social work has urged doctoral social work programs to reexamine assumptions about conducting research and responding to new expectations for scholarship. This article examines three promising models to guide scientific research in social work (evidence-based practice, team science, and multi- and transdisciplinary models). We first conducted a systematic review of social work publications (1985–2016) a…
Relationship Satisfaction and Communication Among Urban Minority HIV-Positive and HIV-Negative Mothers: The Influence on Daughter’s Alcohol Use
Family relationships influence children's beliefs and behaviors. This work examined qualities associated with communication about alcohol among 176 mothers and the influence of this communication on daughters' alcohol use. Path analyses by maternal HIV status indicated significant differences. Relationship satisfaction was associated with self-efficacy for both HIV-positive (β = 0.545, p < .001) and HIV-negative (β = 0.557, p < .001) mothers. Mat…
The Medicaid Expansion Gap and Racial and Ethnic Minorities With Substance Use Disorders
We compared the race and ethnicity of individuals residing in states that did and did not expand Medicaid in 2014. Findings indicated that African Americans and Native Americans with substance use disorders who met new federal eligibility criteria for Medicaid were less likely than those of other racial and ethnic groups to live in states that expanded Medicaid. These findings suggest that the uneven expansion of Medicaid may exacerbate racial an…

Organizational Capacity for Service Integration in Community-Based Addiction Health Services

We analyzed client and program data collected in 2011 from publicly funded addiction health services treatment programs in Los Angeles County, California. We analyzed a sample of 14 379 clients nested in 104 programs by using logistic regressions examining odds of …
Examination of Treatment Episodes Among Women and Racial and Ethnic Minorities in Addiction Treatment
Women and racial and ethnic minorities face significant challenges to successfully completing substance abuse treatment. There is limited knowledge about factors that affect women and minorities' treatment careers over several treatment episodes. Survival Cox regression was used to model time and episodes to treatment completion. Using multiyear (2006–2009) data, the sample consisted of 52,799 clients from 276 treatment programs in Los Angeles Co…

What Does It Take for Social Work to Evolve to Science Status? Discussing Definition, Structure, and Contextual Challenges and Opportunities
The emerging discourse on science in social work (SW) has generated much-needed analysis of the profession’s status as a scientific enterprise. Brekke raised critical issues that must be addressed for SW to become a science. This response examines the contextual factors that led to the call for SW science. It also relies on a comparative analysis of attempts by other professions and disciplines to become scientific to discuss critical challenges …
