  • Correlated Errors Challenge Vulnerable Growth

Open Access•Worth Long, Wei Long et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Applied Econometrics•2025

We examine the impact of correlated errors on findings regarding fluctuations in US GDP growth, which are primarily driven by the lower quantiles of the distribution as predicted by financial conditions. A proposed zero‐correlation test reveals the presence of correlated residuals in the quantile regression, introducing endogeneity and raising concerns about the validity of the previous analysis. In response, we extend the model by including two …

  • A Random Forest–Based Panel Data Approach for Program Evaluation

Open Access•Guannan Liu, Worth Long et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Applied Econometrics•2025

It is challenging to conduct controlled experiments to assess the impacts of social policy. To address this, past studies propose a panel data approach using factor models to estimate average treatment effects. The selection of control units is a critical step to balance the goodness of fit within‐sample with the posttreatment forecasting error when the number of observed potential control units is large. In this study, we propose using random fo…

  • Silence breaking

    Open Access•Feng Chen, Worth Long•ARTICLE•Journal of Population Economics•2024•References: 2

This paper introduces an index for assessing local attitudes toward women in the United States, leveraging the Google search index and a machine learning methodology. Exploiting the constructed measure of sexism, our investigation reveals that the #MeToo movement garnered greater attention in areas characterized by low measured sexism in the pre-MeToo era. Additionally, a substantial increase in reported sex crimes is observed in those areas post…

  • Platelet counts affect the association between hyperhomocysteinemia and pregnancy complications

Open Access•Bin Yu, Bin Zhang et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2023

Among Chinese pregnant women, one subgroup (high tHcy and low PC) has the highest risk of ICP and another (high tHcy and high PC) has the lowest risk of GDM; tHcy and platelet could be used as indicators to identify the women with high risk of ICP or low risk of GDM

  • The Pink Tide and Income Inequality in Latin America

Open Access•Germán Feierherd, Pilar Larroulet et al.•ARTICLE•Latin American Politics and Society•2023•Cited by: 5•References: 50

Latin American countries experienced a significant reduction in income inequality at the turn of the twenty-first century. From the early 2000s to around 2012, the average Gini coefficient fell from 0.51 to 0.47. The period of falling inequality coincided with leftist presidential candidates achieving electoral victories across the region: by 2009, 11 of the 17 countries had a leftist president-the so-called Pink Tide. Using a difference-in-diffe…

  • Semiparametric estimation and variable selection for single‐index copula models

Open Access•Stanislav Anatolyev, Bingduo Yang et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Applied Econometrics•2021

A copula with a flexibly dependence structure can capture complexity and heterogeneity in economic and financial time series. Based on the recently proposed single‐index copula, we propose a simultaneous variable selection and estimation procedure. This method allows for choosing the most relevant state variables by using a penalized estimation with large sample properties derived. Simulation results demonstrate the good performance of the method…
