The Dis/Articulation of Anti-Gender Politics in Eastern Europe
This special issue examines anti-gender politics in the specific geographical and cultural space of Eastern Europe. It investigates whether the region is just another battlefield for anti-gender politics, or a unique setting for specific developments and strategies, considering the impact and legacy of specific historical experiences and sociological and cultural characteristics. The contributions map out these complex developments, examining Cze…
Victor Frankenstein and his creature
The expression ‘anti-gender campaigns’ has rapidly made its way to describe a new and specific wave of activist and policy initiatives against gender and sexual equalities. The goals of this article are twofold: to offer a close examination of the current state of anti-gender campaigns in Europe, and to look back at the scholarship produced in the last decade. Following the historical unfolding of these campaigns, this article explores four scene…

De-democratization and the Politics of Knowledge
The politics of knowledge matter to the current wave of de-democratization in Europe. Building on Walby’s social complexity theory, this article highlights the dynamics between epistemic configurations and contemporary politics. Focusing on academic institutions, and taking gender studies as an illustration, this article shows that actors opposing (social) sciences and academia not only aim to dismantle existing institutions of knowledge producti…

Europe and LGBT Rights
Europe matters to contemporary LGBTQ politics. This chapter maps out various political articulations connecting Europe and LGBT rights today, arguing that Europe has played a central role in much of the LGBTQ movement’s history but that this relationship is complex and multifaceted depending on the vast space of what “Europe” means to many different actors. In other words, Europe has been imagined and unimagined as LGBTQ-friendly by various actor…
Coming out of the political science closet
This article gives an overview of the field of LGBT politics in European political science. It does not aim to offer an exhaustive review of the literature, but rather to highlight the major trends and to reflect critically on the endeavours of the last 25 years. After a history of the development of this field of research and a mapping of existing scholarship, this piece sheds light on new areas of inquiry (Europe, international relations, natio…
The Feminist Project under Threat in Europe
Is the feminist project under threat in Europe? This thematic issue addresses the question in both theoretical and empirical ways, focusing on the various ways in which feminist politics are opposed and why, on what the impact of such opposition is, and how to improve our theoretical understanding of this particular manifestation of gender and politics. The issue addresses three major challenges: a need to reflect on the most suited concepts and …
Disentangling and Locating the “Global Right
This article examines the development of campaigns against “gender ideology” in Europe, leading to the emergence of a specific family of mobilizations that we call anti-gender campaigns. These campaigns, started in the mid-1990s as a Catholic project in reaction to the results of the UN conferences of Cairo and Bejing, but developed significantly in several European countries after crucial encounters with right-wing populism. While recognizing th…
Belgium
This chapter shows that &s;political style&s; has influenced both the way linguistic divisions have been bridged within the movement and, more decisively, the kind of relationship, which has been established with the state. Therefore, if the lesbian and gay movement has been able to alter state regulations, it has also been strongly influenced by the state and, more broadly, by a specific political culture which has moulded state institutions. Th…
Conclusion
This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book underlines how radical transformations of the state or even political ruptures may create new opportunities for lesbian and gay activists. The lesbian and gay movement may also alter state institutions, as illustrated by the introduction of new institutions, agencies or special committees dealing with these issues. These bodie…

Unpacking the Sin of Gender
In a meeting with Polish bishops preceding the World Youth Day in July 2016, Pope Francis deplored the prevalence of what he calls 'ideological colonization' in the contemporary world. Addressing a question by a Polish bishop about the situation of refugees, the Roman Pontiff declared
The International Lesbian and Gay Association (Ilga) and the Expansion of LGBT Activismin a Unified Europe
The NGOization of LGBT activism
This article discusses the Europeanization of social movement organizations using the case of ILGA-Europe, the umbrella of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender organizations in Europe. It examines the impact of Article 13 of the Treaty of Amsterdam, which bans discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation, and focuses on three entrenched dynamics ILGA-Europe has rapidly undergone: NGOization, institutionalization, and professionalization…

Regulating intimate relationships in the European polity
Since 1989, twenty-three European countries have implemented same-sex union (SSU) laws. We argue that the political processes leading to the adoption of these policies have been shaped by international influences such as policy harmonization, elite lesson-drawing and most importantly by social learning fostered within transnational networks. We examine SSU policies in four West European countries-Germany, Austria, Belgium, and Spain-to illustrate…

A Paradise for LGBT Rights? The Paradox of Belgium
How is it that a small country such as Belgium, with its reputation of relative conservatism, has jumped to the forefront of LGBT-friendly nations when it comes to the extension of rights to, and implementation of government policies for, its LGBT population? The analysis offered here focuses on a combination of six causes: the impact of wider secularization processes; the political history and culture of the country; the organization of especial…

Global Times, Global Debates? Same-Sex Marriage Worldwide
This article examines the global diffusion of same-sex marriage (SSM) debates highlighting the diversity of countries where SSM is currently under discussion. This increasing diversity challenges most explanations originally put forward in the literature that have focused on socio-demographic changes relating to marriage, the couple, the family and intimacy, secularization and a decline of homophobia, as well as the influence of social movements.…

The International (Lesbian and) Gay Association and the question of pedophilia
In 1993–1994, the International Lesbian and Gay Association (ILGA) lost its observer status in the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) because US conservative groups publicised the membership of two pedophile groups. This article examines debates on pedophilia within ILGA before this event, and documents the slow decline of pro-pedophilia stances. It relates them to wider debates on gay liberation, and argues that pro-pedophilia a…
