The Contribution of Religiosity to Ideology: Empirical Evidences From Five Continents
The current study examines the extent to which religiosity account for ideological orientations in 16 countries from five continents (Australia, Brazil, Chile, Germany, Greece, Finland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Poland, Slovakia, Spain, Turkey, Ukraine, the United Kingdom, and the United States). Results showed that religiosity was consistently related to right and conservative ideologies in all countries, except Australia. This relation held across …
Basic Values, Ideological Self-Placement, and Voting: A Cross-Cultural Study
The current study examines the contribution of left–right (or liberal–conservative) ideology to voting, as well as the extent to which basic values account for ideological orientation. Analyses were conducted in 16 countries from five continents (Europe, North America, South America, Asia, and Oceania), most of which have been neglected by previous studies. Results showed that left–right (or liberal–conservative) ideology predicted voting in all …
Personal values and political activism: A cross-national study
Using data from 28 countries in four continents, the present research addresses the question of how basic values may account for political activism. Study 1 (N = 35,116) analyses data from representative samples in 20 countries that responded to the 21-item version of the Portrait Values Questionnaire (PVQ-21) in the European Social Survey. Study 2 (N = 7,773) analyses data from adult samples in six of the same countries (Finland, Germany, Greece…

Using basic personal values to test theories of union membership
Using data from the fourth round of the European Social Survey, we investigate the determinants of the individual union membership decision, focusing on the role of dispositional—as opposed to situational—factors. We argue that the battery of items in Schwartz's (1992) theory of basic personal values is relevant in the context of unionism and can be used to test the validity of certain elements of existing theories. We further claim that the use …
Persistence in regional voting patterns in Turkey during a period of major political realignment
Using province-level data from five nationwide elections held during the past decade, we examine the main voting patterns in Turkey. By means of cluster analysis, we classify the 81 provinces according to vote shares of the major parties and independent candidates, and repeat this exercise for each election held between 1999 and 2009. We find that three-way and five-way partitions of the country adequately capture the main political cleavages in …

Party Preferences and Economic Voting in Turkey (Now That the Crisis Is Over)
The purpose of this study is to re-examine the factors that shape party preferences in Turkey by estimating an individual vote intention function. The economic variables in the empirical model are items that can be used to test the conventional `economic voting' hypotheses, i.e. whether individuals' economic evaluations about the past or the near future affect their party choice. In an earlier article, based on data from 2002, evidence was found …
Imputed Rents and Regional Income Inequality in Turkey: A Subgroup Decomposition of the Atkinson Index
Dayioğlu M. and Başlevent C. (2006) Imputed rents and regional income inequality in Turkey: a subgroup decomposition of the Atkinson index, Regional Studies 40, 889–905. The purpose of this study is to examine the regional differences in the effect of home ownership on income distribution in urban Turkey. The earlier finding that income distribution improves with the inclusion of imputed rents from owner-occupied housing has raised the question a…
The Effect of Squatter Housing on Income Distribution in Urban Turkey
The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of home-ownership on income distribution in Turkey. Making use of raw data from an official income distribution survey which provides information on cash and in-kind incomes of household members and imputed rents for home-owners, it is found that home-ownership has an equalising effect on income distribution in the urban areas of Turkey. This result is attributed to the fact that many low-income …
Empirical investigation of party preferences and economic voting in Turkey
This article examines the factors that shape party preferences in Turkey by estimating an individual vote intention function that includes both economic and non‐economic factors. The economic variables can be used to test the familiar hypotheses of economic voting theory – whether individuals vote retrospectively and/or prospectively, and whether they are sociotropic and/or egotropic. The non‐economic factors include sociodemographic characterist…
The Effect of Export-Oriented Growth on Female Labor Market Outcomes in Turkey
Voter Profiles and Fragmentation in the Turkish Party System
Based on the multinomial logit estimates of an individual vote intention function, we perform restriction tests to make pairwise comparisons of the voter profiles of the major political parties in Turkey. The economic variables in the model are items that represent the well known hypotheses of economic voting theory, i.e. whether individuals vote retrospectively and/or prospectively, and whether they are sociotropic and/or pocketbook. The non-eco…
