Causal mapping was used to compare poverty activists and non-activists from Canada and the Philippines ( N = 80) in terms of their beliefs about the causes of poverty in developing nations. The causal maps varied as a function of both activist status and country of residence. Activists included more external societal causes in their maps than non-activists, whereas non-activists included more individualistic and internal societal causes. In terms…
Factors Influencing the Pursuit of Health and Science Careers for Canadian Adolescents in Transition from School to Work
Previous research separately acknowledges two emerging trends in adolescence but neglects to integrate them. These are that many changes have occurred in the school to work transitional processes, and that there is substantial need for adolescents, especially young women, to pursue science career pathways. In this study, we link these trends and develop predictive, interactive models of science pursuit for 836 Canadian secondary school graduates …

Fallible decisions in management
Systems in the natural resource industry vary in their tolerance of human errors. Such operations are open to fallible decisions resulting from the way in which the organization deals with information. Organizations must therefore improve on their ability to learn from incidents in order to reduce the frequency and severity of errors. Presents information on fallible decisions from the management and cognitive sciences, as well as major disasters…
Use of a Stakeholder Advisory Group to Facilitate the Utilization of Evaluation Results

Facilitating Instrumental Utilization for Policy Development in a Multisite, Interministerially Sponsored Human Service Program
This article focuses on the instrumental utilization of evaluation findings to assist in the development of program policy, including a brief review of some of the literature in this area. The context from which examples are drawn is an innovative human service program/policy that involves multiple funding ministries and participating agencies. A number of instances of the instrumental utilization of findings from an evaluation of multisite polic…
Issues in the Measurement of Integrated Service Delivery in Human Services
This article discusses measurement issues that arise when evaluators attempt to assess the meaning and extent of integrated service delivery in human services programs. Service integration is a concept that is currently enjoying a major revival. Current social policy directions (especially on the part of the Ontario government) reflect a renewed will to implement integrated service delivery models in human service programs and organizations. Gender Differences in Factors Related to Parenting Style
This study examined parenting styles within the families of high performing science students and explored gender differences in the factors associated with an authoritative parenting style. Participants in the study were 363 students who competed in the Canada-Wide Science Fair, 1992. Results showed that the authoritative parenting style was predominant among participants and that few students were from families with permissive, authoritarian, or…

The current study examined exposure to family and peer receipt of unemployment and general welfare benefits for a sample of 262 unemployed youth between 16 and 24 years of age who were in receipt of social assistance. The findings reveal that exposure to receipt of benefits was most pervasive through peers, with moderate exposure via siblings and minimal exposure via parents. The findings are discussed in relation to existing explanations which s…
Children's and adolescents' views of the work world in times of economic uncertainty
Communitywide economic conditions seem to exert a greater influence on children's and adolescents' views of the work world than do individual family circumstances
Concluding comments
The chapters in this sourcebook suggest important areas for further research
Support sources of adolescents in families adopting older children
The social supports of adolescents in families adopting school-aged children are explored. The perception of support provided by parents was related to severity of problems experienced with the new adoptee. Findings suggest that mothers, more than fathers or friends, are pivotal in adolescents' support systems following such adoptions
Specialized knowledge and the delivery of leisure services to the disabled
Based upon an earlier exploration of knowledge development in Therapeutic Recreation Service (TRS), this paper reexamines the progress that has been made in the area. Perusal of current literature in the field of TRS revealed an increase in research‐oriented articles and greater involvement of therapeutic recreators as communicators. Although these findings were interpreted as positive signs of progress in knowledge development, there was still a…
