  • GeoDa, From the Desktop to an Ecosystem for Exploring Spatial Data

Open Access•Luc Anselin, Xun Li et al.•ARTICLE•Geographical Analysis•2022

Since its introduction more than 15 years ago, the GeoDa software for the exploration of spatial data has transitioned from a closed source Windows‐only solution to an open source and cross‐platform product that takes on the look and feel of the native operating system. This article reports on the evolution in the functionality and architecture of the software and pays particular attention to its new implementation as a library, libgeoda. This li…

  • How walkable is Walker’s paradise

Open Access•Julia Koschinsky, Emily Talen et al.•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning B Urban…•2017

This article tests the extent to which a measure of walkable access is a good proxy for the quality of the walking environment. Based on existing findings on inequalities of walkability, we ask whether this relation varies between neighborhoods with low and high incomes. Walk Score is used to measure walkable access while the State of Place Index is applied to synthesize the qualitative urban form dimensions collected as part of the Irvine Minnes…

  • Spatial Variation in the Quality of American Community Survey Estimates

    Open Access•David C Folch, Daniel Arribas-Bel et al.•ARTICLE•Demography•2016•Citada por: 18•Referencias: 18

Social science research, public and private sector decisions, and allocations of federal resources often rely on data from the American Community Survey (ACS). However, this critical data source has high uncertainty in some of its most frequently used estimates. Using 2006–2010 ACS median household income estimates at the census tract scale as a test case, we explore spatial and nonspatial patterns in ACS estimate quality. We find that spatial pa…

  • The Walkable Neighborhood

    Open Access•Emily Talen, Julia Koschinsky•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2013

The past decade has seen a surge of interest in the walkable neighborhood, motivated by environmental, health, economic, and communitarian goals. We take stock of this literature by linking together thevarious strands of research in which the “walkable neighborhood” is a primary concern. We organize theliterature into three broad categories: measurement, criticism, and tests of the benefits of walkableneighborhoods. The latter category involves th…

  • Spatial Heterogeneity in Spillover Effects of Assisted and Unassisted Rental Housing

    Julia Koschinsky•ARTICLE•Journal of Urban Affairs•2009•Citada por: 14•Referencias: 4

Three new contributions are added to the literature on subsidized rental housing impacts on nearby property values: (1) a primary focus on the spatial heterogeneity of these effects that warrants caution regarding citywide results, (2) an analysis by zoning area, and (3) a comparison of impacts with unsubsidized apartments. An adjusted-interrupted time-series (difference-in-difference) model is estimated with a comprehensive data set for Seattle,…

  • Challenging the Third Sector Housing Approach

    Julia Koschinsky•ARTICLE•Journal of Urban Affairs•1998•Citada por: 7•Referencias: 2

Recent third sector housing research contends that community-based housing organizations can successfully balance social and financial objectives by simultaneously involving and building communities while developing and managing long-term affordable housing. This article analyzes the impact of the federal housing policies of the 1980s and 1990s on the ability of community-based housing organizations to meet this “double bottom line” (Bratt et al,…
