Conversation Analysis and Communication Disorders
A communication disorder can profoundly affect a person's ability to convey information to others and to produce a full range of social actions within conversation (such as requesting, offering, telling off, correcting, telling jokes or stories, etc.). It can have a significant impact on a person's social and personal identity and their ability to create and maintain interpersonal relationships. The investigation of communication disorders is imp…
Variation and Interactional Non-Standardization in Neuropsychological Tests: The Case of the Addenbrooke’s Cognitive Examination
The Addenbrooke’s Cognitive Examination (ACE-111) is a neuropsychological test used in clinical practice to inform a dementia diagnosis. The ACE-111 relies on standardized administration so that patients’ scores can be interpreted by comparison with normative scores. The test is delivered and responded to in interaction between clinicians and patients, which places talk-in-interaction at the heart of its administration. In this article, conversat…

American Social Character: Modern Interpretations
Once more, with feeling: Conductors’ use of assessments and directives to provide feedback in choir rehearsals
In this article Conversation Analysis is used to explore the way that conductors give feedback in choir rehearsals through the use of assessments and directives. Assessments and directives have previously been investigated in some forms of music teaching and rehearsing, although not in choir rehearsals. There is also a paucity of research on the methods by which a conductor may give feedback following an episode of singing by the choir. This anal…
Atypical Interaction: Conversation Analysis and Communicative Impairments
In this article I review conversation analytic work on “atypical interaction”—social interactions where a participant has a communicative impairment. Drawing together some of the main themes and findings in the field, I highlight three forms of atypicality in these interactions, with each linked to more than one type of communicative impairment: (a) atypical forms of delay in TCU progressivity; (b) atypical problems of understandability, intellig…
From conversation to connection: A cross-case analysis of life-story work with five couples where one partner has semantic dementia
Semantic dementia causes progressive communication difficulties that significantly impact on the person and their family. There is a paucity of research examining conversation skills in this condition and associated interventions to support interaction, such as life-story work. This study used a multiple case study design to: (a) explore the everyday conversation experiences of five individuals with semantic dementia and their spouses; and (b) ex…
Combining music and life story to enhance participation in family interaction in semantic dementia: A longitudinal study of one family’s experience
It is argued that fostering greater opportunities for such in-the-moment connections is an important goal for intervention, particularly when language may be significantly compromised
Intervening With Conversation Analysis in Speech and Language Therapy: Improving Aphasic Conversation
In this review, I discuss conversation analytic informed intervention for aphasia, a language disorder acquired following brain damage. As well as describing this form of intervention and outlining features of the studies produced over the last 15 to 20 years that provide evidence of its effectiveness, I discuss some features of this approach that may be of relevance to interventionist conversation analysis more generally. Data are in British Eng…
Living With Semantic Dementia: A Case Study of One Family’s Experience
Semantic dementia is a variant of frontotemporal dementia and is a recently recognized diagnostic condition. There has been some research quantitatively examining care partner stress and burden in frontotemporal dementia. There are, however, few studies exploring the subjective experiences of family members caring for those with frontotemporal dementia. Increased knowledge of such experiences would allow service providers to tailor intervention, …

Formulating Actions and Events With Limited Linguistic Resources: Enactment and Iconicity in Agrammatic Aphasic Talk
In this article a conversation analytic approach is used to investigate the form and use of enactment by speakers with agrammatic aphasia in talk-in-interaction. Enactment here refers to the employment by participants of direct reported speech and/or other behavior such as the use of gesture/body movement and/or prosody to iconically depict some aspects of reported scenes or events. The enactment of these speakers is notable in terms of the disti…
Projecting a Reference in Aphasic Talk and Normal Talk
In this article, a form of intra-turn projection is analyzed where the first component of a compound turn-constructional unit (TCU) containing a phrase, such as “the one (who/that),” projects that a reference (e.g., to a person or to an entity, such as a film) is due to be produced in a later component. This type of utterance is described by linguists as a pseudo-cleft construction or as a paraphrase of the pseudo-cleft construction. It is observ…

Gentlemanly Power: British Leadership and the Public School Tradition
Political Leadership and the Late Victorian Public School
ETWEEN about I870 and the First World War the Public KSchools developed many of the features that make them a controversial topic today. Yet, in the flood of literature that they have inspired, there have been few objective attempts to assess the Victorian Public Schools in terms of their own ends. Even those critics who have charged the schools with defending social inequality and stifling individualism have not generally questioned the schools'…
