Innovation as a cause of highly skilled migration: Evidence from Greece
This study investigates innovation as a cause of highly skilled migration. Drawing on a totally new database that includes all the Greek PhD holders, combined with panel data from the Global Innovation Index covering 57 countries over the 2009–2020 period, we find that innovation constitutes a strong determinant for highly skilled migration. That is, a rise in innovative performance is positively associated with an increase in the number of highl…
Highly educated skilled migrants are attracted to global cities: The case of Greek PhD holders
In this paper, we investigate to what extent highly educated skilled Greek migrants are attracted to global cities. With the use of a novel database, we find that highly educated Greek migrants are attracted more to cities indexed as global than to cities that are not indexed as global. Moreover, the more the international indexes that list a city as global, the greater the number of such migrants this city receives; that is, these migrants prefe…

Social Construction of Community and Immigration Networks in Rural Areas: Towards a Dynamic View of Their Importance to Balkan Immigrants
In this study we firstly introduce a source of social capital formation that has not yet been pointed out by the theory of social capital. We do this by historically assessing the social structures in South European rural areas, with a particular focus on the ones prevailing in the Greek countryside. This is the historically embedded sense of community for people living in agricultural communities. Secondly, we introduce immigrants' social networ…
Immigrants’ employment strategies and their economic welfare: The case of the Greek countryside
We investigate the employment strategies developed by Immigrants Working in Agriculture – ‘IWA’ – in Greece. To counter seasonality and the insufficient income of agricultural work, IWA develop employment strategies to improve their economic status. Specifically, we find that IWA develop two distinct and substitute strategies: multi-employment and movements following the crops. These strategies are processes of IWA integration into the local econ…
Migrants, Economic Mobility and Socio-Economic Change in Rural Areas: The Case of Greece
This article evaluates the contribution of Immigrants Working in Agriculture (IWA) and their socio-economic mobility over time. Up to the present, European and Greek literature has focused on immigrants' impact on metropolitan areas, in part due to the relatively insignificant role of agriculture in the European economies. Moreover, concerning the socio-economic mobility of IWA only snapshot views are available in the literature. Through field-wo…
Geographical Proximity and Immigrant Labour in Agriculture: Albanian Immigrants in the Greek Countryside
We investigate the importance of geographical proximity between Greece and Albania for the migrating experience of Albanian immigrants who work in the Greek countryside. From the fieldwork research we conducted in the countryside of northern Greece we find that the geographical proximity between Greece and Albania (the fact that they are bordering countries) and the inherent seasonality of agricultural employment allow immigrants to make rapid an…
