An Exploratory Cross-National Study of K–12 Teachers’ Generative AI Literacy and Classroom Enactment
Guided by Social Cognitive Theory (SCT) and the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), this qualitative study examines how K–12 teachers across five countries, the United States (n = 7), India (n = 5), Qatar (n = 5), Colombia (n = 5), and the Philippines (n = 4), conceptualize AI literacy and integrate generative AI into their practice. Through 26 semi-structured interviews conducted in summer and fall 2025, we identified three cross-national pattern…
Writing with AI
To support the integration of AI in education, this empirical study investigated what lessons college students learned from using Generative AI for writing. We recruited 47 students in the United States from a university writing course. Students completed an assignment in which they used Generative AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT) to draft an application letter or personal statement. Data were collected using a survey of five open-ended questions about t…
Exploring teachers’ self-efficacy and willingness to provide accommodations in teaching students with autism
This study examined teachers' self-efficacy to teach students with autism and willingness to provide accommodations, as well as whether a short online intervention presenting a child's first-person experience with autism can improve these factors. Analysis of data from 180 international teachers in diverse settings indicated a high willingness to provide accommodations but limited confidence in doing so. Institutional support and gender were sign…
Past, present, and future directions of learning analytics research for students with disabilities
We examined the learning analytics literature over the past ten years (2011-2020). Our results show that only 33% of articles we retrieved focused on students with disabilities and 67% of articles we retrieved engaged with students with disabilities tangentially on several themes: detecting difficulties to provide early intervention, using learning analytics as tools to promote learning, addressing accessibility issues and challenges, and discuss…
Live Instruction Predicts Engagement in K–12 Remote Learning
How does live instruction relate to student engagement in distance learning? Does the relationship differ across grade levels? This study addresses these questions by examining data from a random sample of families from a large urban school district in southern California. We find a strong correlation between live instruction and student engagement in online learning among elementary school students, with every additional hour of live instruction…

Hispanic Students’ Sense of Control in Relation to Post-Secondary Enrollment Outcomes
U.S. Hispanics are the fastest growing minority population pursuing post-secondary education, yet their bachelor degree attainment lags behind other ethnic–racial groups. Previous work supports the theory that having a high locus of control (LOC) can enable persistence in challenging post-secondary settings. We examine LOC as a potential mitigate against low college enrollment, and hypothesize that Hispanic students’ capability to enroll in post-…
Refutation Texts
Individuals often have misconceptions about education policy issues. Prior research has shown that refutation texts can address misconceptions in other areas (e.g., climate change, GMOs); this study is the first to explore whether participants’ views on controversial education policies—the Common Core State Standards and charter schools—are similarly malleable through refutation text interventions. Results of two experiments show that refutation …
Game-Inspired Design
This paper describes research and development around two gameful courses that reimagined their assessment systems to better support student autonomy and promote engagement. We present results from an ongoing classroom-based research study that signals the success of these designs and, in so doing, explore key elements of what we call gameful design: the process of redesigning core elements of a learning environment to better support intrinsic mot…
