  • Never (Again) the Twain Shall Meet? Some Reflections on Australian and Papua New Guinean Shared Histories

    Dario Di Rosa•ARTICLE•Australian Historical Studies•2024

Ethnographic research with the Kerewo-speakers in the Kikori area of the Gulf Province shows that they refuse the severance of Australia's and Papua New Guinea (PNG)'s histories. From the Kerewo perspective, PNG's national independence cannot erase valued social relationships forged through past contact with Australia. Drawing on the work of Frederick Cooper and John Pocock, this article contends that Australia's and PNG's shared past should be c…

  • La fiaba

Dario Di Rosa•ARTICLE•Journal of American Folklore•2022

The book's theme is concisely contained in the opening statement: “In this book I am concerned with folktales . . . not with literary fairy tales like those by Andersen or Collodi, nor with the cinematographic transpositions like those of Walt Disney. This is an anthropology book, not of literary criticism” (p. 11; emphasis added; translation by the reviewer). In this volume, Glauco Sanga combines years of expertise in various fields (folklore, s…

  • ‘If It Wasn’t For Us … ’

Dario Di Rosa•ARTICLE•Journal of Pacific History•2021

Scholarship on the Indigenous experience of World War II has justly focused on recording accounts of direct witnesses of that period. Such a sense of urgency, at least in Papua New Guinea, has led to the neglect of areas of the country that, though not directly affected by the war, were invested in the war effort by providing labour and soldiers. Communities residing in those areas recall stories of their war heroes as key figures for the liberat…

  • Ethnohistory and Historical Ethnography

Open Access•B Douglas, Dario Di Rosa•CHAPTER•Oxford Bibliographies in…•2020•Citada por: 2

This article situates ethnohistory historically, conceptually, methodologically, and geographically in relation to its intertwined "parent" disciplines of anthropology and history. As a named interdisciplinary inquiry, ethnohistory emerged in the United States in the mid-1950s in the "applied" context of academic involvement in Native American land claims hearings after 1946. However, anthropology (the science of humanity) has overlapped, interse…

  • Microstoria , Pacific History, and the Question of Scale

Dario Di Rosa•ARTICLE•Journal of Pacific History•2018

This article is prompted by the recent debate on the so-called crisis in the humanities, and the related call for historians to change direction by returning to history of the longue durée. While pointing out that the ‘crisis’ is more influenced by the changing political economy of the tertiary education sector than by specific historiographical practices, I suggest that small-scale analysis remains compatible with global history approaches. Arti…

  • A Lesson in Violence

    Dario Di Rosa•ARTICLE•Journal of Colonialism and…•2017•Referencias: 5

This article explores the moral dimensions of the deployment of violence in colonial British New Guinea through close examination of the two punitive expeditions conducted in 1901 and 1904 in response to the killing of missionary James Chalmers by Kerewo people in the Gulf of Papua. I focus on the different discourses embedded in the texts produced to describe those expeditions, with particular attention to the language used to justify the recour…
