Old colony Mennonites in Mexico: Migration and inbreeding
Among Canadian Mennonites whose ancestors left Flanders in the sixteenth century, one group separated as the Old Colony and part migrated in the 1920's from Canada to Mexico, where they constitute a large inbred isolate. In 1967, survey data including migration histories were collected on one‐third of the households in one subdivision, the “M Colony.” Church records were copied that gave vital statistics and surnames of almost all families in the…

A New Look at Sect Development
Although much progress has been made toward understanding how sects develop, currently available typologies and theories cannot account for how all sects develop. Sociologists have tended to restrict their studies to relatively nonradical sects confronting relatively tolerant societies in ways that are passsive or only mildly militant. In short, they have studied the kinds of sects common in English-speaking countries. They have not dealt adequat…

Church History and the Contrasystem: A Case Study
When Moses entreated Pharoah to let his people go the children of Israel were aware of differences between themselves and others in the land. The ensuing drama which included some stern "supernatural" interventions finally convinced Pharaoh that here indeed was a group of people that was different and not about to become a constituent of the core culture. The theme of "stranger and pilgrim" became a motif for the Jewish people; later a prophet na…

Toward an Understanding of Religion and Social Solidarity
The integrating power in society of religion is a generally accepted fact, but little careful analysis of this “fac” is available. The creation of a working definition of solidarity (integration) is one of the prerequisites; another is the specification of how religion functions in the integration process. The paper presents a working definition of solidarity, which involves dependence and interdependence. The function of religion in an actual mi…
