Open Access•Henry Clay Lindgren, Brian Moritsch et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1986

Three studies of samples of university women ( Ns between 50 and 79) and men ( Ns between 28 and 47) were undertaken to determine the concurrent validity of two questionnaires and a TAT test, each purporting to measure achievement motivation. In Study I, Lindgren's NachNaff test correlated more strongly than Ray's Achievement Orientation (AO) test with scales on the Strong-Campbell Interest Inventory (SCII) considered to reflect different degrees…

  • Measuring Need to Achieve by n Ach-n Aff Scale—A Forced-Choice Questionnaire

    Open Access•Henry Clay Lindgren•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1976

To measure the need to achieve (n Ach), a questionnaire was constructed which required the subject to make a forced choice on each of 30 pairs of adjectives. Half the adjectives were based on the Need for Achievement scale and the other half on the Need for Affiliation scale of Gough's Adjective Check List. When the questionnaire was scored in the n Ach direction, differences between sex and age groupings of college students were negligible and n…

  • Political Conservatism and its Social Environment

    Open Access•Henry Clay Lindgren•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1974

Although common sense and popular belief hold that the white-collar class is more conservative politically and less liberal than the blue-collar class, researchers have found a negative relationship between social status and authoritarian traits, including political conservatism. The election of 1972 offered a unique opportunity to test the hypothesis that voters' preferences in each state for the more conservative candidate would be negatively, …

  • Ideal Teacher Concepts

    Open Access•Andy Uchiyama, Henry Clay Lindgren•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1971

Gough, Durflinger, and Hill (1968) developed a scoring formula, based on California Psychological Inventory scales, that discriminated between student teachers rated good or poor by training supervisors. Cross-validation studies showed that the student-teacher scoring formula (STSF) predicted student success fairly well. The researchers also wished to identify personal characteristics related to high and low scorers on the STSF, and asked fratern…

The number of responses produced in the third phase was significantly higher for women, but not for men. Level of creativity, but not the number of responses, was positively c…

  • Authoritarianism, Independence, and Child-Centered Practices in Education

    Open Access•Henry Clay Lindgren•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1962

Although common sense suggests that child-centered attitudes and practices in education (as contrasted with traditional attitudes and practices) would be more consistent with equalitarian than with authorirarian attitudes, there appears to be little research that directly confirms such a supposition, particularly with respect to nonteaching personnel. Data regarding such a relationship would be of interest and value especially in the United State…
