Updating our earlier work on Brussels as the paradigm of a multi-level, multi-cultural, multi-national city, and in the context of Brussels’s recent troubled emergence as the epicentre of violent conflict between radical political Islam and the West, this paper sets out the paradoxical intersection of national (i.e. Flemish and Francophone), non-national and ethnic minority politics in a city placed as a multi-cultural and multi-national ‘urban a…

  • The colours of Belgium: Red devils and the representation of diversity

    M Martiniello, G Boucher•ARTICLE•Visual Studies•2017

This article examines the recent and huge support for the Belgian national football team, the Red Devils, during the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 football Euro tournaments. The upsurge in support for the Red Devils came as a surprise in a divided country in which national identity is very weak, and where the issue of the lack of societal integration is often discussed. The discussion shows the complexity of a super-diverse Belgian society and, rel…

  • Introduction – Diversity incorporation in the cultural policy mainstream: Exploring the main frameworks and approaches bridging cultural and migration studies

    R Zapata-Barrero, Wiebke Sievers et al.•ARTICLE•Crossings Journal of Migration…•2017•Cited by: 1

The point of departure of this special issue is that in spite of the existence of a large debate on cultural policies, on the one hand, and on migration-related diversity policies, on the other hand, there are still few studies that deal with the intersection between these two policy fields. All contributions of the special issue bridge this gap by analysing if and how cultural policies, cultural institutions and artistic activities have changed …

    Open Access•M Martiniello•ARTICLE•SociologieS•2014

The article offers a relatively new theoretical framework articulating macro, meso and micro levels of analysis of the migration process, which often are disconnected in the sociology of migration. This alternative approach rests on the classical sociological concept of career. The concept of migratory career integrates structures of opportunities, individual characteristics and networks to make sense of the migratory experience. This concept hel…

The purpose of this special issue is to establish to what extent the place in which immigrants settle (namely the region or country) might determine the types of political activity in which they engage. More precisely, we aim to ascertain whether and for what reasons different forms of transnational political activity develop in the United States and Europe. To achieve this rather ambitious goal, through looking at a series of case studies from E…

It is argued that the political powerless-ness of the ethnic collectivities has been reproduced by the Belgian state and polity: ethnic leaders have been neutralized in consultative politics, and ethnic elites have been promoted on the individual level. To do so, the concept of underclass as developed in the USA and Great Britain is examined and criticised. The main point is that if the word‐underclass, as is often…
