  • “Why Can't They Just Stay?” A Critical Conversation and Membership Categorization Analysis of Racial Neoliberalism in English Language Education

    Open Access•Justin Lance Pannell•ARTICLE•TESOL Quarterly•2026

In this article, I analyze the co‐constitution of race and neoliberalism within the discourse of an English language classroom. Open Access•Justin Lance Pannell•ARTICLE•Language in Society•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 35

Conducting a textual analysis of an archive of ethnography of communication texts, …

  • I Ain't Even Gonna Cap to It: Ethnography-as-Surveillance and Dark Sousveillance in the Classroom

    Open Access•Justin Lance Pannell•ARTICLE•Journal of Linguistic Anthropology•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 58

This article theorizes classroom ethnography in the socio-historical context of the U.S. as a form of racialized surveillance which is calibrated by anti-Black colonial discourses, racially saturated perception, and one's vulnerability to interpellation. Focusing on the interaction of "Dominic," a Black focal student, which was documented through ethnographic fieldwork, I conduct a frame analysis to investigate how ethnographic surveillance, as a…
