Ecological momentary assessment in prolonged grief research
Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) is a method of data collection that entails prompting individuals to report their experiences (e.g., thoughts, feelings, and behaviors) in real time over the course of their day-to-day lives. By providing rich information about how these experiences unfold over time within an individual, EMA has the potential to substantially advance our understanding of grief. However, there is uncertainty about how bereaved…
Intensive outpatient treatment of PTSD and complicated grief in suicide-bereaved military widows
We report on a novel 2-week intensive outpatient treatment program (IOP) for 24 widows bereaved by the suicide death of their veteran spouse. We targeted symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and complicated grief (CG) concurrently in three separate cohorts. All patients either witnessed the death or discovered the body of their deceased partner, who was a veteran of the United States military. PTSD, CG, and depression symptom severity…
Training community providers in evidence-based treatment for PTSD
Despite some limitations, these preliminary data support that consultation is an important component to include in PTSD therapy training and implementation in the community. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2019 APA, all rights reserved)
Five-factor model in bereaved adults with and without complicated grief
Knowledge about what psychological characteristics underlie complicated grief (CG) is limited. The current study examined the five-factor personality traits in 81 bereaved adults with (n = 51) and without (n = 30) CG. A trained doctoral-level clinician evaluated participants using a structured, diagnostic psychiatric interview, and they completed self-report measures of grief and personality. A multiple regression model indicated that higher leve…
Examining the Relationship Between Parent and Child Psychopathology in Treatment-Seeking Veterans
This study aimed to examine: (1) the relationship between parental psychopathology and child psychopathology in military families and (2) parenting sense of competence as a mediator of the relationship between veteran psychopathology and child psychopathology. As part of their standard clinical evaluations, 215 treatment-seeking veterans who reported having a child between the ages of 4 and 17 were assessed for psychopathology (posttraumatic stre…
Complicated grief after suicide bereavement and other causes of death
The authors compared baseline demographic characteristics, clinical features, and grief-related thoughts, feelings, and behaviors of individuals bereaved by suicide, accident/homicide and natural causes participating in a complicated grief (CG) treatment clinical trial. Severity of CG and depression and current depression diagnosis did not vary by loss type. After adjusting for baseline demographic features, time since death and relationship to t…

Delivering cognitive processing therapy in a community health setting
Despite the applicability of cognitive processing therapy (CPT) for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) to addressing sequelae of a range of traumatic events, few studies have evaluated whether the treatment itself is applicable across diverse populations. The present study examined differences and similarities among non-Latino, Latino Spanish-speaking, and Latino English-speaking clients in rigid beliefs-or "stuck points"-associated with PTSD s…
Working memory capacity is associated with optimal adaptation of response bias to perceptual sensitivity in emotion perception
Emotion perception, inferring the emotional state of another person, is a frequent judgment made under perceptual uncertainty (e.g., a scowling facial expression can indicate anger or concentration) and behavioral risk (e.g., incorrect judgment can be costly to the perceiver). Working memory capacity (WMC), the ability to maintain controlled processing in the face of competing demands, is an important component of many decisions. We investigated …
Adult Anxiety Disorders in Relation to Trait Anxiety and Perceived Stress in Childhood
It is well established that objective early life stressors increase risk for anxiety disorders and that environmental stressors interact with dispositional factors such as trait anxiety. There is less information on how subjective perception of stress during childhood relates to later clinical anxiety. This study tested whether childhood perceived stress and trait anxiety were independently and interactively associated with adult anxiety disorder…
The structure of feared social situations among race-ethnic minorities and Whites with social anxiety disorder in the United States
We investigated feared social situations in individuals with social anxiety disorder from different racial and ethnic groups in the United States. The sample included 247 African Americans, 158 Latinos, and 533 non-Latino Whites diagnosed with social anxiety disorder within the past 12 months from the integrated Collaborative Psychiatric Epidemiology Studies data set. After randomly splitting the full sample, we conducted an exploratory factor an…
Normal Grief and Complicated Bereavement Among Traumatized Cambodian Refugees
Dreams of the Dead Among Cambodian Refugees
The authors investigated the importance of dreams of the deceased in the experiencing of prolonged grief (PG) and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among Cambodian refugees who survived the Pol Pot genocide (1975-1979). Such dreams were frequent in the last month (52% of those surveyed), and most often involved a relative who died in the Pol Pot period. Past month frequency was correlated with PG severity (r = .59) and PTSD severity (r = .52).…
Effects of a psychiatric label on medical residents’ attitudes
BACKGROUND: Few data are available on the effects of a psychiatric label on medical residents' attitudes towards an individual. AIMS: To investigate the effect of a psychiatric label on the attitudes of medical residents towards an individual. METHODS: Medical residents were randomly assigned to one of two vignettes describing the same apparently healthy person, differing only in the presence of a psychiatric label for one of them. Participants (…
Complicated grief and related bereavement issues for DSM-5
Bereavement is a severe stressor that typically incites painful and debilitating symptoms of acute grief that commonly progresses to restoration of a satisfactory, if changed, life. Normally, grief does not need clinical intervention. However, sometimes acute grief can gain a foothold and become a chronic debilitating condition called complicated grief. Moreover, the stress caused by bereavement, like other stressors, can increase the likelihood …
REM motivation induced by brief REM deprivation
Prominence of the brain's right-hemisphere information processing and intensity of dream experience are two theoretically related constructs that have been proposed as important psychological aspects of REM sleep. Either view is consistent with the prediction that the effect of REM deprivation will depend in part on the nature of cognitive activity that is initiated at the onset of each REM period and that "substitutes" for the interrupted REM pr…
