  • The mummy of Ritter Kahlbutz – an unsolved mystery

Open Access•Andreas Winkelmann, Maximilian Voß et al.•ARTICLE•HOMO•2025

In Kampehl, a village northwest of Berlin, a mummified body is preserved and exhibited in a church annexe. It is said to represent the remains of Christian Friedrich von Kahlbutz (1651-1702), a local nobleman. According to local legend, he swore before a court that his body would not decay if he were the culprit in an alleged case of murder. We offer the first comprehensive investigation of the mummy using anthropological and historical methods. …

  • Evidence for dynastic succession among early Celtic elites in Central Europe

    Open Access•Joscha Gretzinger, Felicitas Schmitt et al.•ARTICLE•Nature Human Behaviour•2024•Citada por: 2•Referências: 90

The early Iron Age (800 to 450 BCE) in France, Germany and Switzerland, known as the ‘West-Hallstattkreis’, stands out as featuring the earliest evidence for supra-regional organization north of the Alps. Often referred to as ‘early Celtic’, suggesting tentative connections to later cultural phenomena, its societal and population structure remain enigmatic. Here we present genomic and isotope data from 31 individuals from this context in southern…

  • First direct dating of the Late Neanderthal remains from Subalyuk Cave in Northern Hungary

Zsolt Mester, Hélène Coqueugniot et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropologischer Anzeiger•2024•Citada por: 2•Referências: 22

The Subalyuk hominin remains were uncovered in 1932 in a cave of the same name in the Bükk Mountains, near the village of Cserépfalu in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County, Northern Hungary. The remains represent two individuals, an adult and a young child who have been described in a few publications since their discovery, providing substantial anthropological data and general assessments of their Neanderthal affiliation. They were associated with Late …

  • Mitogenomic diversity and stable isotopes provide insights into the maternal genetic history, mobility patterns, and diet of early medieval individuals from the Eastern Italian Alps

    Open Access•Coia, Valentina Coia et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2022•Citada por: 1•Referências: 80

The Eastern Italian Alps (South Tyrol) is a connection area between continental Italy and the northern Alps. Various local factors, such as the heterogeneous environment, complex historical events, and different mobility patterns, may have influenced the genetic makeup of early medieval alpine groups. However, no ancient genetic data from these groups are currently available. This study provides a first picture of the ancient mitochondrial DNA (m…

  • Ancient DNA analysis of rare genetic bone disorders

Open Access•F Maixner, Julia Gresky et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

  • The elusive parasite

Open Access•Alvie Loufouma Mbouaka, Michelle Gamble et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2021•Referências: 128

Although malaria is one of the oldest and most widely distributed diseases affecting humans, identifying and characterizing its presence in ancient human remains continue to challenge researchers. We attempted to establish a reliable approach to detecting malaria in human skeletons using multiple avenues of analysis: macroscopic observations, rapid diagnostic tests, and shotgun-capture sequencing techniques, to identify pathological changes, Plas…

Alsónyék-Bátaszék in Southern Hungary is one of the largest late Neolithic settlements and cemeteries excavated in Central Europe. In total, 2,359 burials from the Late Neolithic – Early Copper Age Lengyel culture were found between 2006 and 2009. Anthropological investigations previously carried out on individuals from this site revealed an interesting paleopathological case of tuberculosis in the form of Pott’s disease dated to the early 5th mi…

    Open Access•Nicole Searcey, K Reinhard et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2013

  • Revision of tuberculous lesions in the Bácsalmás-Óalmás series - preliminary morphological and biomolecular studies

    Annamária Pósa, F Maixner et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropologischer Anzeiger•2013•Citada por: 1

Previous investigations carried out in some parts of the 16th-17th century AD series of Bácsalmás-Oalmás (southern Hungary) have already provided interesting paleopathological cases of tuberculosis (e.g. Molnár & Pálfi 1994). These studies were essentially based on macromorphological analysis, biomolecular methods were used only in a few cases (e.g. Haas et al. 2000). From a macromorphological point of view, former investigations have only consid…

  • Rib lesions in skeletons from early neolithic sites in Central Germany

    Open Access•Nicole Nicklisch, F Maixner et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2012•Citada por: 8•Referências: 69

As an infectious disease, tuberculosis (TB) is one of the major causes of death worldwide. Paleopathological and paleomicrobiological studies indicate a long standing association of the causative agent Mycobacterium tuberculosis and its human host. Since the occurrence and the epidemic spread of this pathogen seem to be closely linked to social and biological factors, it is of particular interest to understand better the role of TB during periods…
