  • Family structure and children’s cognitive development

    K S Lee, Julie E Artis et al.•ARTICLE•Families Relationships and…•2021•References: 9

Previous research on family structure and child development has largely focused on the disadvantages faced by children who transitioned out of married families. However, we know less about how family structure affects child outcomes for children starting out in single-mother families. In this article, we use the kindergarten cohort of the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study to analyse children’s academic outcomes between kindergarten and eighth gr…

  • Cohabitation, marriage and relationships with ‘parents-in-law’

    Julie E Artis, Martha A Martinez•ARTICLE•Families Relationships and…•2014•Cited by: 5

Previous research suggests that, compared with married couples, cohabiters have weaker ties with parents. However, we know little about cohabiters’ relationships with their partners’ parents – their ‘parents-in-law’. This study explores intergenerational solidarity with parents-in-law, but goes beyond a comparison of cohabitation versus marriage, distinguishing cohabiters by intentions to marry. Using the National Survey of Families and Household…

  • Family Law and Social Change

    Open Access•Julie E Artis, Andrew V Krebs•ARTICLE•Law & Social Inquiry•2014•References: 10

Rapid changes in family life over the last forty years have led to substantial alterations in family law policy; specifically, most states now endorse joint custody arrangements for divorcing families. However, we know little about how lower court judges have embraced or resisted this change. We conducted in‐depth interviews with judges in twenty‐five Indiana jurisdictions in 1998 and 2011. Our findings suggest that judges' views of joint custody…

  • Maternal Cohabitation and Child Well-Being Among Kindergarten Children

    Open Access•Julie E Artis•ARTICLE•Journal of Marriage and the Family•2007•Cited by: 26•References: 32

Using data collected from 10,511 kindergarten children and their parents from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study-Kindergarten Cohort, this study examines child well-being across cohabiting 2-biological-parent families; cohabiting stepfamilies; married stepfamilies; and married 2-biological-parent families. Findings indicate no differences in child well-being for children living in cohabiting stepfamilies and cohabiting 2-biological-parent fam…

  • Critiquing the Case for Marriage Promotion

    Open Access•Beth Skilken Catlett, Julie E Artis•ARTICLE•Violence Against Women•2004•Cited by: 11•References: 8

This article argues that governmental policies to promote marriage fail to recognize the reality of domestic violence in many families’ lives. By minimizing and misrepresenting the role of domestic violence, these policies ultimately are self-defeating. After describing the recent history of welfare reform and marriage promotion policies, we briefly review the arguments advanced in favor of such policies. We then offer a critique of marriage prom…

  • Judging the Best Interests of the Child

    Open Access•Julie E Artis•ARTICLE•Law & Society Review•2004•Cited by: 24•References: 65

With dramatic changes in family life over the last several decades, child custody law has shifted from a maternal preference to a more egalitarian standard, the best interests of the child. Despite this change in the law, scholars have debated whether gender continues to play a role in the resolution of custody disputes. Drawing on feminist legal scholarship and sociolegal research on judges, I assess the current debates over gender and custody b…

  • Explaining the Decline in Women's Household Labor

    Open Access•Julie E Artis, Eliza K Pavalko•ARTICLE•Journal of Marriage and the Family•2003•Cited by: 45•References: 40

Women's hours of housework have declined, but does this change represent shifts in the behavior of individuals or differences across cohorts? Using data from the National Longitudinal Surveys, individual and cohort change in housework are examined over a 13-year period. Responsibility for household tasks declined 10% from 1974-75 to 1987-88. For individual women, changes in housework are associated with life course shifts in time availability as …

  • Women's Caregiving and Paid Work

    Eliza K Pavalko, Julie E Artis•ARTICLE•The Journals of Gerontology…•1997•Cited by: 51•References: 4

Care of an ill or disabled family member or friend is disproportionately done by women and typically is done in late midlife. Because this is also a time in the life course when women's labor force participation peaks, many women faced with caregiving demands have to decide how to balance them with their employment. In this study we use the National Longitudinal Survey (NLS) of Mature Women to examine the causal relationship between employment an…

  • Gendered Perceptions of Dependency in Discussions of Mental Illness

    Julie E Artis•ARTICLE•Journal of Health and Social…•1997•Cited by: 2

Current research on mental health typically equates dependent behavior with negative health outcomes and thereby ignores how other people perceive dependency and mental illness in gendered ways. Using data from the Indianapolis Network Mental Health Study, I conducted a quantitative analysis of gender differences in the prevalence of network members' discussions of dependency, followed by a qualitative analysis of how network members describe dep…
