  • Reasoning with algorithms

    Open Access•Justien Dingelstad, Justien id_orcid Dingelstad et al.•ARTICLE•Big Data & Society•2026

Predictive algorithms often hold the promise to mitigate uncertainty about the future. Critical social science scholars of algorithms have long argued that such promises are usually not fulfilled. This study contributes to this debate through an ethnographic case study of an algorithm for early detection of sepsis in neonatal care. We show that indeed, this algorithm produces more uncertainty. However, this uncertainty is generative for care prac…

  • An Algorithm at the Table at Multidisciplinary Diagnostic Meetings

Open Access•Justien Dingelstad, Francisca Grommé et al.•ARTICLE•Sociology of Health & Illness•2026

This paper focuses on how a radiological classification algorithm temporarily became part of existing diagnostic deliberations between different medical specialists. It describes a participatory ethnographic case study in which the output of the algorithm was presented by the first author during weekly multidisciplinary neuro‐oncology meetings. Following the dramaturgical framework of deliberations by Hajer and adhering to the sociology of diagno…

  • The Performative Power of Digital Nursing Platforms

Open Access•Justien Dingelstad, Francisca Grommé et al.•ARTICLE•New Technology Work and Employment•2025•References: 57

Feminised sectors such as healthcare are underrepresented in labour platform research. This study focuses on emerging platforms for licensed nurses and combines a multimodal analysis of the promotional materials of 12 Dutch nursing platforms with interviews with platform directors and representatives. Our analysis shows how nursing platforms construct ‘alternative work realities’ that include features of seamless integration of work and private l…

  • Imagining Citizens as More than Data Subjects

    Open Access•Francisca Grommé, Evelyn Ruppert•ARTICLE•Science & Technology Studies•2021

The article presents a methodography of a collaborative design workshop conducted with national and international statisticians. The workshop was part of an ethnographic research project on innovation in European official statistics. It aimed to bring academic researchers and statisticians together to collaborate on the design of app prototypes that imagine citizens as co-producers of official statistics rather than only data subjects. However, t…

  • Doing statistics, enacting the nation

    Open Access•Francisca Grommé, Stephan Scheel•ARTICLE•Nations and Nationalism•2020•Cited by: 12•References: 51

It has been widely acknowledged in debates about nationalism and ethnicity that identity categories used for classifying people along the lines of culture, race, and ethnicity help to enact, that is, bring into being, the collective identities they name. However, we know little about how categories acquire their performative powers. The contribution of this paper is twofold: first, it proposes a conceptual framework based on concepts and insights…

  • Doing a transversal method

    Open Access•Stephan Scheel, Francisca Grommé et al.•ARTICLE•Global Networks•2020•Cited by: 2•References: 35

Beck and Sznaider call on 'methodological cosmopolitanism' to transcend methodological nationalism and account for an increasingly cosmopolitanized reality. We take up their challenge by drawing on our experiences of conducting a collaborative ethnography of methodological changes in the production of population statistics within and between European national and international statistical institutes. Drawing on debates in science and technology s…

  • Citizen Data and Trust in Official Statistics

Open Access•Evelyn Ruppert, Francisca Grommé et al.•ARTICLE•Economie et Statistique /…•2019•References: 13

Many, if not most, big data are connected to the lives of citizens: their movements, opinions, and relations. Arguably big data and citizens are inseparable: from smartphones, meters, fridges and cars to internet platforms, the data of digital technologies is the data of citizens. In addition to raising political and ethical issues of privacy, confidentiality and data protection, this calls for rethinking relations to citizens in the production o…

  • Population Geometries of Europe

    Open Access•Francisca Grommé, Evelyn Ruppert•ARTICLE•Science Technology & Human Values•2019•Cited by: 10•References: 15

The political integration of the European Union (EU) is fragile for many reasons, not least the reassertion of nationalism. That said, if we examine specific practices and infrastructures, a more complicated story emerges. We juxtapose the political fragility of the EU in relation to the ongoing formation of data infrastructures in official statistics that take part in postnational enactments of Europe’s populations and territories. We develop th…

  • Provocation

    Open Access•Francisca Grommé•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning D…•2016•Cited by: 3•References: 38

The introduction of technologies that monitor and track individuals to attribute suspicion and guilt has become commonplace in practices of order maintenance in public space. A case study of the introduction of a marker spray in Dutch urban public transport is used to conceptualise the role of technology in everyday resistances against surveillance. The introduction of this technology made available alternative subject positions. The notion of pr…

  • Turning Aggression into an Object of Intervention

    Francisca Grommé•ARTICLE•Science as Culture•2015•Cited by: 9•References: 17

Real-world experiments that test new technologies can affect policy and practice by introducing new objects of intervention through tinkering; the ad hoc work of realigning relations in the face of frictions, surprises, and disturbances that occur when introducing a technology. In a pilot study on aggression detection, tinkering moved aggression in and out of the human body. In the end, the pilot defined aggression as a set of acoustic-physical v…
