Non-invasive survey for the diagnosis and restoration of monuments. The Church of S. Francesco della Scarpa in Lecce (Italy)
The church of San Francesco della Scarpa is located in the historic centre of Lecce, Southern Italy. It received its name in the 16th century, when the minor friars, who lived in the demolished convent of Santa Maria del Tempio, were divided into conventual and observant groups: the former wore shoes, unlike the latter. The Domus Nozze D'Argento in Pompeii
Monitoring of ancient buildings is an issue of great interest in view of a proper restoration. This paper describes the noninvasive monitoring of the Domus Nozze D'Argento in Pompeii. The Roman house, as occurred for many other buildings in Pompei, was buried in the ash from the 79 ad eruption of Mount Vesuvius. It was excavated in 1893, the year of the silver wedding anniversary of King Umberto and Queen Margherita of Savoy. This event gave the …
From Settlement Abandonment to Valorisation and Enjoyment Strategies
The abandonment of inhabited places is a phenomenon widespread on a global scale that has spanned centuries. It has led to the birth of the so-called ‘ghost towns’. These lifeless sites dot the internal Mediterranean and European areas, testifying to the changeability of the human settlements. Through a vision that reverses the paradigm that epitomises the ‘ghost towns’, these places can be transformed from a problem into an opportunity for the d…
Data-driven modeling reveals the Western dominance of global public interest in earthquakes
Catastrophic earthquakes stimulate information-seeking behaviors beyond the affected geographical boundaries; however, our understanding of the dynamics of global public interest in earthquakes remains limited. Herein, we harness Big Data to examine the dynamic patterns of global public interest, concerning 17 significant worldwide earthquakes over 2004–2019. We find that the global community shows a higher level of interest when an earthquake oc…
Time windows of opportunities to fight earthquake under-insurance
Earthquake insurance can be a useful tool to build more sustainable societies and disaster-resilient communities. However, the coverage is not common in many countries. This article aims to contribute to the literature through an empirical analysis of the online interest in earthquake insurance through Google Trends. The proposed methodology implies to move from a top-down conceptual approach to a bottom-up/data-enabled one. It allows us to explo…

Furthermore, heritage is a source of economic development and a key factor for sustainable development. The dissemination of such values a…
