Dater Bellechaise.
Analysing Roman pottery workshops in the Civitas Viromanduorum (France, Picardy)
An archaeomagnetic intensity-based search for order in the chaos of the destruction of Hama (Syria) dated to 720 BCE
Of stone and mortar. Studying Notre-Dame Cathedral's core materials
A complementary, two-method spherical approach to direction-based archeomagnetic dating
When Cistercian architecture began opening up to modernity, sobriety made way for elements comparable to those of secular and non-reformed Benedictine architecture. Large chevets, complete with an ambulatory and radiating chapels, that began with the abbey church at Clairvaux, spread to other locations such as Royaumont, Moreruela and Alcobaça. Grand chevets with an ambulatory and multiple rectangular chapels grew in popularity. The delay in the …
Tracing the geomagnetic field intensity variations in Upper Mesopotamia during the Pottery Neolithic to improve ceramic-based chronologies
In the history of physical representation of the artist in the Middle Ages, the case of Matthieu d’Arras has a special place. Matthieu d’Arras was the first master mason of St Vitus Cathedral in Prague from 1342/1344 until his death in 1352 and, thanks to the bust representing him in the triforium of the cathedral’s chevet, the first medieval architect whose features are known to us. This bust represents the birth of the self-portrait in 15th-cen…
Archaeological and Geomagnetic Implications of New Archaeomagnetic Intensity Data from the E arly B ronze High Terrace ‘ M assif R ouge’ at M ari ( T ell H ariri, S yria)
We present new archaeointensity data from the M esopotamian city of M ari ( S yria), in particular from the high terrace ‘ M assif R ouge’ dated at c.2550 bce . These data were obtained using the experimental protocol developed for the T riaxe magnetometer. They allow for increased confidence in a strong geomagnetic field intensity maximum during the 26th century bce . They also show that the second urban phase of M ari (‘ville II ’) was marked b…
Evidence for Complexities in the RHX Dating Method
The rehydroxylation (RHX) dating method applicable to virtually all baked clay fragments still requires testing and new developments. Here, we have obtained new weighing measurements from Syrian medieval ceramic fragments. In particular, they allow us to illustrate the scatter in RHX behaviour that may exist between different potsherds of the same age and found at the same archaeological site, thus having experienced the same effective lifetime t…
