  • The “Hottest Ever January” in Germany

Open Access•Melanie Nagel, André Le Gall et al.•ARTICLE•Politics and Governance•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 20

Following the German Federal Government’s announcement of agricultural subsidy cuts in November 2023, farmers mobilized unprecedented protests, creating what their associations celebrated as a “hot January with more protests than the country has ever seen” (“Bauern wollen ‘Kampfansage’ der Ampel annehmen,” 2023). These actions ultimately forced the government to withdraw the proposed policy changes. Our study applies the politicization/depolitici…

  • Organizational roles and network effects on ideational influence in science-policy interface

Open Access•K Satoh, Melanie Nagel et al.•ARTICLE•Social Networks•2023

We examined how scientific information influences policy beliefs among organizations in climate change policy networks in Germany and Japan. Different combinations of information types, policy beliefs, and organizational roles were found to play instrumental roles. Ideational influence can occur when (1) the sender is a credible information source, (2) the receiver can understand the “message,” and (3) the receiver depends on the sender’s informa…

  • Powerful stories of local climate action

    Open Access•Melanie Nagel, Melanie Schäfer•ARTICLE•Review of Policy Research•2023•Cited by: 4•References: 7

The complex relationship between local climate action and reducing global emissions is often difficult to grasp and cities might scale back their ambitions if they realize that the way is hard and rocky. We analyze local climate change narratives through the lens of the narrative policy framework (NPF). Following the NPF, policy actors use narratives to communicate information to change an existing system in order to achieve a specific goal. For …

  • Tackling climate change on the local level

    Open Access•Melanie Nagel, Marlene Kammerer•ARTICLE•Review of Policy Research•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 34

Climate change, as one of the most pressing problems of our time, affects different levels of governance. At the international level, countries negotiate to find common ground on various topics related to climate change, but most importantly on how to share the burden of mitigating global warming and its effects on humankind. At the national level, national governments formulate greenhouse gas reduction (GHG) targets, set out climate change mitig…

  • Discourse Networks and Dual Screening

    Open Access•Felix Bossner, Melanie Nagel•ARTICLE•Politics and Governance•2020•Cited by: 2•References: 8

The increasing relevance of social networking platforms is accompanied by a growing number of studies using digital trace data. However, most studies still lack further understanding of the data-generating process. This analytical gap can be directly attributed to the prevalence of quantitative approaches, as only qualitative work is able to generate these insights. The broad methodological toolset of Discourse Network Analysis addresses this sho…

  • Refining the Multiple Streams Framework’s Integration Concept

    Vilém Novotný, K Satoh et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Comparative Policy…•2020•Cited by: 4•References: 17

The article proposes one of the first quantitative operationalizations of the Multiple Streams Framework’s (MSF) concept of policy community integration, which determines the gestation process of policy ideas in the policy stream. It argues that operationalization by the Gini coefficient of nodal degree and by Freeman’s segregation score enables us to indicate better the type of a policy community (less integrated, or more integrated), and thus, …

  • Protesting iconic megaprojects. A discourse network analysis of the evolution of the conflict over Stuttgart 21

    Open Access•Melanie Nagel, K Satoh•ARTICLE•Urban Studies•2019•Cited by: 6•References: 47

The past decades witnessed enormous transformations in the built environment of cities, and one of these trends is the development of iconic megaprojects. Public protests against these projects occur frequently, and scholars in urban governance have diagnosed this as an emerging ‘post-political’ condition, that is, as a sign of a deficient democratic politics. Others criticise this kind of reasoning as a ‘post-political-trap’ (Beveridge and Koch,…
