    Open Access•Nat Nesvaderani•ARTICLE•American Anthropologist•2026•References: 26

Socially oriented documentary films are increasingly expected to articulate “impact” goals to gain international distribution, yet what counts as impact for those represented remains contested. This article examines how narratives about working and displaced youth in Iran are produced and circulated through social filmmaking. Global campaigns construct single‐issue narratives that obscure structural violence and resonate with geopolitical savior …

  • Anthropologie multimodale

    Open Access•Nat Nesvaderani•ARTICLE•Anthropen•2024

In recent years, there has been an enthusiastic call for the use of multimodal methods in anthropological research, largely inspired by the democratization of media production technologies. This initial excitement for multimodal methods has been closely followed by an ambivalence when digital media tools often fall short of creating the hoped-for social and political change. This entry deals with the potentials and limits of multimodal methods in…

  • Multimodal Anthropology

    Nat Nesvaderani•CHAPTER•2023

Since the 2010s, there has been an enthusiastic call for using multimodal methods in anthropological research. This call dovetails with the democratization of media production technologies that make the collection of data and the distribution of findings more accessible, particularly to audiences outside of academia. Existing modalities, such as sound, image, print, and archival practices, are joined by newer digital modalities, including social …

  • Navigating “Sensitive” States: How Surveillance Practices Affect Research Development between the United States and Iran

    Open Access•Nat Nesvaderani•ARTICLE•International Journal Middle East…•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 2

I had completed two months of exploratory dissertation research in Tehran in the winter of 2015 when I was called in for questioning by two men who declined to provide me with their names or that of the office they called from. We met in an unmarked building adjacent to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in downtown Tehran. They were middle-aged and sat on opposite sides of a table with a framed picture of Ayatollah Khomeini. When they offered me te…

  • Embodying Place: Displaced Afghan Youth and Participatory Media Production in Iran

    Open Access•Nat Nesvaderani•ARTICLE•Visual Anthropology Review•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 12

This article explores the implications of the Making Home Project, a participatory audio‐visual media project with migrant and refugee youth in Iran. This project does not picture the faces of youth as they express caring relationships and attachments to the people and places within the migrant neighborhoods where they reside—places locally characterized as poor, dangerous, and transient. I examine the audio, the visual and the off‐screen encount…
