Toward a Theory of Technical Virtue
Can technical labor be virtuous? This article investigates the production of a Qur’anic sound recording, suggesting that focusing on the process of religious media production rather than its intended product might bring to the fore new ethical engagements that trouble recent oppositions between “ordinary” and “transcendent” ethics or even the classic dialectic of sacred and profane. Vocal Arrangements
This article uses ethnography of a studio recording project underway at a Qur'anic school in Salé, Morocco, to offer new insight on sound, media, and religious authority in Islamic contexts. The aim of the project is to record the entire Qur'an incorporating all of its seven canonical, variant readings ( qirā’āt ), which are enjoying a small renaissance in Morocco. Several of the school's faculty, known as shaykhs, engaged as expert listeners and…
Electrosonic statecraft
On a radio show operated by Morocco's National Broadcasting Service, listeners call in to recite the Qur'ān on air and receive critical commentary on their performance from the show's hosts. The show, called Learn Recitation of the Qur'ān, is linked politically and discursively to Morocco's broader "recitational revival" (ṣaḥwa tajwīdīyya) and to its concerns with a distinct "Moroccan" variant of Qur'ānic recitational practice. The show's on-air …
