Road to perdition? The effect of illicit drug use on labour market outcomes of prime-age men in Mexico
This research addresses the impact of illicit drug use on labour market outcomes of men in Mexico. We leverage statistical information from three waves of a comparable national survey and make use of the Lewbel's heteroskedasticity-based instrumental variable strategy to deal with the endogeneity of the drug consumption. Our results suggests that drug consumption has fairly negative effects in the Mexican context: it reduces employment, occupatio…

How Much Have We Changed? Long-Term Determinants of Attitudes toward Homosexuality in Chile
This study explores the evolution of individual attitudes toward homosexuality in Chile during the period 1998–2018. Gender Gaps in Working Conditions
The evolution of the gender pay gap has received a great deal of attention from academia and public opinion alike, yet our understanding of the differences in non-monetary working conditions is much scarcer. Through the use of the European Working Conditions Survey and six composite indicators of job quality, this research aims to expand our knowledge on the gender gaps in job attributes across the European Union over the period 2005-2015 in thre…
The effect of migration on unionization in Austria
We analyze how native employees’ union membership rates change in response to foreign employees using Austrian administrative data for the period 2002 to 2012. Using an instrumental variables approach, our results indicate a negative effect of immigrant employees on native employees’ unionization rates at the firm level. The negative effect is the result of a greater—mostly voluntary—turnover of unionized native employees in firms with a larger s…
Employment and Occupational Mobility among Recently Arrived Immigrants: The Spanish Case 1997–2007
Measuring More than Money: The Social Economics of Job Quality
Job quality is a crucial link between the economy and well-being. This original book proves that it can and should be measured, proposing a theoretically based multidimensional ‘Index of Job Quality’ that is tested in the EU member States. The index proves particularly useful to measure the differences in job quality by country, occupation, gender and age.

Working life and retirement pensions in Spain: The simulated impact of a parametric reform
This article aims to offer an ex ante evaluation of the impact of a parametric reform of the Spanish pension system that would involve increasing the reference period used to calculate benefits, an approach proposed many times by various actors in the socio-economic field. Such gradual change may be categorized as a non-structural reform of the pension system. This contrasts with reforms of a structural nature that have been very popular in Latin…
E pluribus unum? A critical survey of job quality indicators
In recent years, there has been growing concern in Europe about the lack of an established comparable measure of job quality to complement the widely accepted quantitative indicators in the formulation and evaluation of European employment policies. The aim of this paper is to offer a guided tour around the different views and existing proposals of job quality indicators, mainly from a European perspective. First, we discuss the methodological de…
