The present study, which is part of a wider inter-disciplinary research project on Medieval Rome funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation, focuses on the archaeometric characterisation of glass tesserae from the apse mosaic of the church of S. • The Medieval Glass Mosaic of S. Agnese fuori le mura in Rome

Open Access•Rita Deiana, Alberta Silvestri et al.•ARTICLE•Heritage•2023•References: 3

The mosaic in the apse of the Church of S. Agnese fuori le mura in Rome represents one of the most important examples of the wall mosaics of the Roman Middle Ages. Although it is associated with Byzantine figurative culture, no scientific study has addressed this important piece of Italian art history. One factor that has probably limited and created difficulties for its analysis is the poor legibility of the original parts, which are compromised…

  • Geophysical Surveys for Archaeological Research in Urban Areas

    Open Access•Rita Deiana, Caterina Previato•ARTICLE•Heritage•2023•References: 5

The Roman theatre of Padua stood in the area now occupied by Prato della Valle, a huge elliptical-shaped square with a central green part (Isola Memmia) surrounded by a canal, built in the second half of the 18th century and part of the modern urban city center of Padua. Some still-preserved remains of the Roman theatre stand at the bottom of this canal. Recently, in 2017, emptying and cleaning the canal and excavating these remains, which had be…

    Open Access•Rita Deiana, Gian Piero Deidda et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological Prospection•2021•Cited by: 5•References: 2

Nuraghe S'Urachi is a monumental architectural complex in West Central Sardinia that was probably first built in the Bronze Age and remained occupied continuously into the early Roman Imperial period. It has been the object of systematic and large‐scale archaeological investigations in three different phases since 1948 when the first excavations revealed a complex building within a massive defensive wall and multiple towers. Intermittent fieldwor…

  • Obsidian and Obsidian-like Glass Tesserae

    Open Access•Valentina Cantone, Rita Deiana et al.•ARTICLE•Open Archaeology•2020•Cited by: 4•References: 5

Pliny the Elder testifies that roman workshops used volcanic glass (obsidian), but also produced and used a dark glass (obsidian-like glass) quite similar to the natural one. In the context of the study on medieval mosaics, the use of the obsidian and obsidian-like tesserae is a challenging research topic. In this paper, we present the results of a multidisciplinary study carried out on the Dedication wall mosaic, realized by a byzantine workshop…
