  • A multi-analytical approach to fetal/neonatal birth trauma and possible metabolic stress in a Neolithic alpine mobility context (3932–3653 cal BCE)

Open Access•Omar Larentis, Francesco Carrer et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2026

Fetal or neonatal skeletal trauma is uncommon even in modern clinical settings and is hardly identifiable in the archaeological record, where preservation constraints and the absence of soft tissues limit diagnostic confidence. We report a fetal/neonatal individual (RAB ID1; c. 40 lunar weeks) recovered from the Ripari Alti rock shelter (north-eastern Italian Alps; c. 1100 m a.s.l.). AMS radiocarbon dating of a tibial fragment places the remains …

  • Shellfish Gatherers at the Mid‐Holocene Settlement of KHB‐1 (Phase Seventh Millennium BC ), Ra's al‐Khabbah (Ash Sharqiyah Region, Sultanate of Oman)

Open Access•Manuel Alejandro Benítez‐Gale, Juan Jesús Cantillo Duarte et al.•ARTICLE•Arabian archaeology and epigraphy•2025•References: 5

The paper summarises the results from the study of the marine fauna documented in the Holocene site of KHB‐1, Phase 0, corresponding to the seventh millennium BC , as the earliest recorded occupation of the settlement. Situated along the coast on a marine terrace in the Ash Sharqiyah region (Sultanate of Oman). The archaeomalacological record is presented for units 120, 131 and 140, from a structure filled by silty sediment mixed with shells midd…

  • Diet and subsistence in the Alps in Late Antiquity

Open Access•Simona Mileto, Fabio Cavulli et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2023•References: 13

The Busa delle Vette site was investigated as part of the UPLanD project, focused on the archaeology of pastoralism, to shed light on the lifeways of pastoral groups during the summer months. The site is composed of a hut and some enclosures located on a glacial cirque at 1850 m asl, in the Dolomites (Veneto, Italy), dating back from the Late Antiquity to the Early Middle Ages (5th to the 11th century CE). Initial data suggested that the hut was …

    Open Access•Fabio Cavulli, Simona Scaruffi•ARTICLE•Arabian archaeology and epigraphy•2020•References: 12

The excavation of KHB‐1 archaeological site was part of the Joint Hadd Project [Joint Hadd Project is a project operating in the Ja’lān region since 1985, born under the collaboration between ISIAO (Istituto Italiano per l’Africa e l’Oriente, Rome), CNRS (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, Paris) and the University of Bologna] carried out in the Ja’lān region, along the coast of the Sultanate of Oman. Different phases of occupation wit…

  • Wooden tools and fire technology in the early Neanderthal site of Poggetti Vecchi (Italy)

Open Access•Biancamaria Aranguren, Anna Revedin et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the National…•2018

Significance Wood is a widely available and versatile material, which has admittedly played a fundamental role in all human history. Wood, however, is most vulnerable to decomposition. Hence, its use is very rarely documented during prehistory. The present study yields new insights into the cognitive abilities of the early Neanderthals in wooden tool production and pyrotechnology. The early Neanderthals from the late Middle Pleistocene site of Po…

  • Thoughts on nomadism in Middle Holocene Oman

    Open Access•Fabio Cavulli, Simona Scaruffi•ARTICLE•Arabian archaeology and epigraphy•2013•Cited by: 14•References: 20

In the study of the Arabian Middle Holocene, some of the least widely understood topics are those of nomadism, subsistence strategy and mobility. Until now, various scholars operating in the area have proposed different models, particularly on the basis of faunal analysis and territory evaluations. The focus of this paper will be to reconsider this debate in light of studies carried out in the Ja'lān region in the Sultanate of Oman, where until 1…

  • Évolution paléogéographique du Ja'alan (Oman) à l'Holocène moyen

    J-F Berger, Cleuziou et al.•ARTICLE•Paléorient•2005•Cited by: 15
