  • Fossil records of Bovidae and Cervidae from the Late Pliocene and Early Pleistocene of Slovenia

    Open Access•Urszula Ratajczak-Skrzatek, Slavko Polak et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2026•References: 37

  • Geological, paleoenvironmental, and depositional dynamics at the Middle Pleistocene Palaeoloxodon antiquus-bearing site of Campo della Spina, Central Italy

    Open Access•Paul P A Mazza, Fabrizio Marra et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2024

The paleontological site of “Campo della Spina”, in central Italy, offers valuable insights into Middle Pleistocene paleoenvironments. Excavations revealed well-preserved skeletal remains of an adult Palaeoloxodon antiquus , embedded in a sedimentary lens displaying alternating lacustrine and volcanoclastic flow characteristics. The well-preserved state of the remains suggests the elephant died at the site where it was found and was subsequent bu…

  • Taphonomic analysis of the MIS 4–3 (Late Pleistocene) faunal assemblage of Biśnik Cave, Southern Poland

    Open Access•Paul P A Mazza, Krzysztof Stefaniak et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 57

  • Poggetti Vecchi (Tuscany, Italy)

Open Access•Biancamaria Aranguren, Stefano Grimaldi et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Evolution•2019•Cited by: 12•References: 98

  • Paleoenvironmental context of the early Neanderthals of Poggetti Vecchi for the late middle Pleistocene of Central Italy

    Open Access•Marco Benvenuti, Jean-Jacques Bahain et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2017

Work on thermal pools at Poggetti Vecchi in Grosseto, Italy, exposed an up to 3-meter-thick succession of seven sedimentary units. Unit 2 in the lower portion of the succession contained vertebrate bones, mostly of the straight-tusked elephant, Palaeoloxodon antiquus , commingled with stone, bone, and wooden tools. Thermal carbonates overlying Unit 2 are radiometrically dated to the latter part of the middle Pleistocene. This time span indicates …
