  • Development of a Moderated Online Intervention to Treat Social Anxiety in First-Episode Psychosis

    Open Access•Carla McEnery, M H Lim et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2019

Background: It is well established that social anxiety disorder (SAD) is a significant clinical problem for individuals with a psychotic disorder. Comorbid social anxiety in individuals with psychosis has been associated with poorer premorbid functioning, increased depression, and a reduced quality of life. Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) is recommended for people with psychosis as a first-line psychological treatment; however, its focus and eva…

  • Support for gay men: An Australian study

Carly Copolov, Alicia Knowles et al.•ARTICLE•Culture Health & Sexuality•2016

Recently, research in the U.S.A. has shown that women, and young people in particular, have become increasingly supportive of gay men. The current study used a cross-sectional, correlational design to investigate these same issues in Australia. The sample included 575 heterosexual participants, 184 men and 390 women. Because a literature search failed to identify an Australian measure of support for gay men, a Support for Gay Men Scale was develo…

  • Adolescents, Risk Behaviour and Confidentiality: When Would Australian Psychologists Breach Confidentiality to Disclose Information to Parents

    Open Access•Rony E Duncan, Ben Williams et al.•ARTICLE•Australian Psychologist•2012•References: 5

The protection of confidentiality in psychological practice is vital. However, confidentiality is not absolute and psychologists are permitted to breach confidentiality under particular circumstances. Ethical challenges surrounding confidentiality are complex with adolescent clients, as assessments often consider the risk that adolescents pose to themselves in addition to the risk posed to others. The current study documented situations in which …

    Open Access•Annie M R Pryor, Alicia Knowles et al.•ARTICLE•Australian Psychologist•2001•Cited by: 2•References: 7

This study investigated general practitioners' (GPs') attitudes towards psychologists and whether these attitudes were related to their referral behaviours. One hundred and five GPs completed a survey instrument. Results showed that GPs' attitudes to psychologists were generally favourable, although they typically underestimated the amount of training required to become a psychologist. Results also suggested that high-referring GPs rated psycholo…

Two hundred and fifty-six members of the Australian public were surveyed regarding situations in which a psychologist might breach confidentiality and third parties to whom information might be disclosed. There was strong agreement between respondents' expectations about the way in which psychologists would act, and their preferences regarding how psychologists should act. While respondents supported confidentiality within the psychotherapeutic r…
