Leopardi’s Disaster
This article explores an idea of ‘disaster’ (‘sciagura’) that figures prominently in Leopardi’s early Canzoni (1818–22). While English versions have generally rendered this word as ‘unhappiness’, ‘woes’, ‘ills’ etc., the emphasis on lyric melancholy misses Leopardi’s sense of a universal ‘calamity’ that is closely bound up with the acquisition of language and with humanity’s increasing separation from nature. The article finds suggestive analogie…
Cliché and repetition: McLuhan understanding modernism
Marshall McLuhan’s literary essays of the 1940s and 1950s have been largely eclipsed by his fame as an early media theorist, though they constitute a rich repository of innovative readings of modernist writing and its nineteenth-century pre-history. At a time when contemporary critics are increasingly exercised about the continuing hegemony of modernism as the impossible arbiter of the new and the original, McLuhan’s early essays offer a series o…
A Mouthful of Air”: Modern Poetry and the Idea of Presence
This article reads in tandem works by three poets, George Oppen, Paul Celan, and Yves Bonnefoy, arguing that each in different ways seems to commit poetry to a pursuit of “presence.” The idea of lyric poetry as a privileged expression of the “here-and-now” continues to be prominent in what is known as the “New Lyric Theory” (I examine the work of Jonathan Culler as one example), though this can seem awkwardly at odds with the widely accepted crit…
The river of time: Time-space, history, and language in avant-garde, modernist, and contemporary Russian and Anglo-American poetry
Mikhail Bakhtin’s concept of the chronotope – ‘the idea of the unity of time and space’, as Ian Probstein defines it (p. xii) – has had its success in the world, though for the most part in regard

Herman Melville: Scepticism, cynicism, and theMemoirs of a Greek
The essay emphasizes the importance of Herman Melville's 1849/1850 visit to London and the Continent, paying particular attention to the books he purchased at this time (listed in his Journal). I argue that in the period leading up to the composition of Moby-Dick, Melville was particularly drawn to essayistic prose and that this provided for him a means of exploring his own intellectual scepticism. At the same time, he was clearly interested in t…
Ezra Pound's Lost Book: Orientamenti
Little has been written about Ezra Pound's extensive contributions to the Rome-based paper Meridiano di Roma between 1938 and 1943, though they provide important insight into the poet's thinking and state of mind during the last years of the Italian regime. I discussed these pieces in a preliminary way back in 1984 (in my Ezra Pound: Politics, Economics and Writing) but there has been surprisingly little interest in them since (even Robert Casill…

Europa! Europa: The Avant-Garde, Modernism and the Fate of a Continent
The first volume of the new series “European Avant-Garde and Modernism Studies” focuses on the relation between the avant-garde, modernism and Europe. It combines interdisciplinary and intermedial research on experimental aesthetics and poetics. The essays, written by experts from more than fifteen countries, seek to bring out the complexity of the European avant-garde and modernism by relating it to Europe’s intricate history, multiculturalism a…
George Oppen and the Poetics of Quotation
Bolivia: Between a Rock and a Hard Place
The election in Bolivia in June 2002 revealed the plight of South America's poorest country trapped between the needs of its own population and external pressures to 'modernise' its economy in-line with overseas interests. After years of experiencing the impact of neo-liberal reforms, 'anti-system' sentiments are starting to challenge the ability of traditional politicians to represent their interests. The success of an outsider Eva Morales, hold…

Deeps in him »: Ezra Pound and the persistent attraction of Laforgue
Meningeal arteries in rhesus macaques ( Macaca mulatta ): Implications for vascular evolution in anthropoids
The branching patterns of meningeal arteries are reported for 200 endocast hemispheres representing rhesus monkeys ( Macaca mulatta ) of known cranial capacity. We detect five basic patterns for the branching of the anterior division of the middle meningeal artery and its relationship with the anterior meningeal artery. These results confirm and elaborate trends published for much smaller samples that were based on direct dissections of rhesus mo…

Alcoholics Admitted to Four Hospitals in England; II. General and Cause-Specific Mortality
The causes of death of alcoholics in England followed up for 10 to 15 years after admission to four hospitals are analyzed. The actual deaths among men were more than twice the expected rate, and among women, more than three times, with accidents, poisoning, violence and suicide far in the lead as causes
