Intentional Faking of the Single Category Implicit Association Test and the Implicit Association Test
The Implicit Association Test (IAT) provides a relative measure of implicit association strengths between target and attribute categories. In contrast, the Single Category Implicit Association Test (SC-IAT) measures association strength with a single attribute category. This can be advantageous if a complementary category--as used in the IAT--cannot be composed or is undesired. If the SC-IAT is to be a meaningful supplement to the IAT, it should …
Exotic Animal Companions and the Personality of Their Owners
The present study explored sex-specific differences in the Big Five factors of personality between different pet ownership groups, in order to understand individual differences in the choice of companion animals. A total of 250 pet owners completed a German version of the NEO-Five Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI). For the first analysis, participants were divided into four broad groups: those owning traditional pets (e.g., cats, dogs), those owning col…
Reaching the Mobile Respondent: Determinants of High-Level Mobile Phone Use Among a High-Coverage Group
The aim of this study is to identify the key determinants of high-level mobile phone use in a high-coverage target group by replicating an Australian study conducted by Walsh and White. Factors predicting high-level mobile phone use and relations between self- and prototypical identity are investigated by using an extended version of the theory of planned behavior (TPB). A total of 215 Austrian university students participated by completing two q…
School-Based Social Training with and without Dogs: Evaluation of Their Effectiveness
This study examined the effects of different training methods on social behavior, empathy, and aggression (open and relational) in children (third-graders) at several intervals. There were three experimental conditions: "Social training without dogs," "Social training with dogs," and "Dog attendance without social training." The project was carried out in three elementary schools— three classes per school (total of 230 children)—over a period of …
Dimensionality and Construct Validity of a Video-Based, Objective Personality Test for the Assessment of Willingness to Take Risks in Road Traffic
The study at hand reports first results about the dimensionality and construct validity of a newly developed objective, video-based personality test, which assesses the willingness to take risks in traffic situations. On the basis of the theory of risk homeostasis developed by Wilde, different traffic situations with varying amounts of objective danger were filmed. These situations mainly consisted of situations with passing maneuvers and speed c…
The Representation of Chance
Two studies were conducted which examined the social representations of chance. In Study 1 (n = 90) an exploratory interview was held with subjects from different occupational groups (theologians, para-psychologists, physicists, statisticians, philosophers, gamblers, "man/woman on the street"). Results showed different metaphors of chance for the groups. Para-psychologists had the most idiosyncratic concept of chance (most of them declaring that …
Self-Appraisals, Actual Appraisals and Reflected Appraisals of Preadolescent Children
The relationship between children's self-perceptions, children's perceptions of others' appraisal (i.e., reflected appraisals) and others' actual appraisals reported by mothers, fathers and teachers were examined. The Self-Description Questionnaire 1 (Marsh, 1988) was presented to 428 children. Parents and teachers were given an adapted form. Additionally, children were asked for reflected appraisals of their mothers, fathers and teachers accordi…
The effects of the presence of a dog in the classroom
This study examined the effects of the presence of a dog in the classroom on field independence, social competence, empathy with animals and social-emotional atmosphere. The participants were 46 first-graders (43 of them immigrants) of two school classes (control and experimental). In the experimental group, a dog was present in the classroom for three months. Multivariate analyses revealed significant enhancement of field independence and empath…
