  • A social-ecological perspective for emerging cities

Open Access•Raffaello Furlan, Michael Grosvald et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Infrastructure Policy…•2022

In the past decade, the capital city of Doha of the State of Qatar has experienced rapid urban expansion and other changes due to globalization, which has caused (i) the loss of a compact urban pattern, (ii) landscape fragmentation, and (iii) deficiency of green spaces. Street vending, among other informal activities in India, is a vital contributor to the informal economy. Many sc…

  • Long-Distance Vowel-to-Vowel Coarticulation in Arabic

    Open Access•Sarah Ahmed, Sarah T Ahmed et al.•ARTICLE•Language and Speech•2019•References: 58

This study investigates anticipatory vowel-to-vowel coarticulation in Arabic, and seeks to determine the degree to which it is affected by the pharyngealization and length of intervening consonants. Speakers of Egyptian Arabic were recorded saying sentences containing nonsense sequences of the form /baɁabaCV:/, where C was chosen from {/t/, /tʕ/, /t:/, /tʕ:/} and V was a long vowel /i:/, /a:/ or /u:/. Analysis of the first and second formants of …

  • Long-Distance Coarticulation in Spoken and Signed Language

    Open Access•Michael Grosvald•ARTICLE•Language and Linguistics Compass•2010•Cited by: 1•References: 93

This study explores the phenomenon of coarticulation in spoken and signed language, focusing in particular on long-distance effects, defined here as the articulatory influence of one phonetic element on another across at least one intervening segment. While a great deal of variability has been found among language users in the production and perception of such effects, the fact that long-distance coarticulation occurs at all has important theoret…
