Queering Religion, Religious Queers
Sex and its expression through sexuality are fundamental aspects of being human and the sense of what it is to be human changes over time thus we have to acknowledge the historical changeability of sexuality. Sexuality as a highly contested subject has undergone many developments over the last one hundred years, from repressive Victorian times through to a globalised era where sex is presented to us regularly in popular culture. Introduction to the special issue

It deliberately foregrounds attentiveness to a diversity of places and positions, as both ‘early career’, often emerging from PhD research, and as 'international', extending across the UK, Canada, Israel, Malaysia and Belgium. Of course the latter intention of being and doing 'international' arguably always fails, but it hoped that this Issue allows for som…

While non-heterosexuality is often associated with secularism, and some sources cast religion as automatically negative or harmful to the realisation of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) identity (or ‘coming out’), we explore how…
Making Space for Young Lesbians in Church? Intersectional Sites, Scripts, and Sticking Points
This article is a case-study exploration of Christianity and sexuality in the lives of young lesbians in the United Kingdom. Religion matters as a personal and political force, but secularizing trends arguably obscure its influence on the complex convergence and intersection of personal, political, familial, and institutional realms (Brierley, 2006; Heelas and Woodhead, 2005). While the question of homosexuality has been a central focus in much d…
