Engaging with Dewey's Valuation in Religious Education to Enhance Children's Spirituality for Democratic Life
In this paper, we want to address how the educative growth of children's spirituality within religious education can be better understood through Dewey's theory of valuation. We would like to draw attention to the link between an education for authentic spirituality and the pursuit of a genuine democratic life, because education, even religious education, is always political. In doing so, we point to the urgency and importance of fostering spirit…

U. S. Poverty and Welfare Reform
Challenges Faced by Women with Disabilities Under Tanf
A number of studies report the multiple problems facing women during the welfare reform transition. Within this group is a large number of single mothers struggling with both poverty and chronic health problems or disabilities. Those with these additional challenges might be expected to experience less success in moving out of poverty than those without these health challenges. In this study, we examine the progress of 178 women around the state …
Poverty in America
Unknow Title Article ID 2178
The end of the millennium marked a major change in U.S. treatment of its low-income parents and children. In 1996, the U.S. implemented a massive welfare reform program called Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF). This program replaced Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC), eliminated the welfare safety net, and mandated that progressively larger and larger proportions of the population of low-income parents receiving public as…

These two groups of women experienced very different recruitment processes. The environmentalists received continuous support from early childhood f…

The sample consists of 663 women who received high-level degrees from a large midwestern university between 1964 and 1974. Results indicate that both family role position and role bargaining outcomes play a maj…
Family or Career First
Many studies have found that deviations from the "normative" sequence of life events—education, pursuit of a career, and then marriage and child rearing—may have a negative effect on people's lives. The study presented in this article explored, through a questionnaire sent to 663 women and in-depth interviews with 7 women, the career and family conflicts of professional women in relation to the sequencing of life events. The women in the sample f…
