  • Exploring the dimensionality of the CLASS Pre-K in Latine preschool classrooms: Further support for a bifactor model

    Open Access•Hanjoe Kim, Jorge E Gonzalez•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Education•2025

Introduction The Classroom Assessment Scoring System (CLASS) is a classroom observational tool commonly used to evaluate both structural and process elements of a classroom. Despite its widespread use, over the last decade, debates about its factor structure across various cultural contexts or settings have arisen. In this study, we asked the question, does the CLASS Pre-K retain its established three-domain structure when applied to classrooms w…

A total of 247 Latinx high school students from an urban high school in Southern California completed a survey that measured self-efficacy, outcome expectations, supports, and barriers to college aspirations. The findings indicate…

  • Remote Schooling During the Covid-19 Pandemic: Rural Latino Caregiver Perspectives and Experiences

Jorge E Gonzalez, Mariana Vázquez et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Latinos and Education•2023•References: 1

The COVID-19 pandemic forced more than 50 million students and their families to adapt to remote schooling. Most disrupted were communities of color, who faced multiple and overlapping inequalities in digital and equipment access, exposing and exacerbating existing disparities. Conducted in a small rural school district, this study surveyed the experiences of rural Spanish-speaking Latino caregivers. A total of 104 caregivers responded to a surve…

Open Access•Bradley H Smith, Hanjoe Kim et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Experiential Education•2022

Background: Summer camps can promote positive youth development. Unfortunately, racial, ethnic, and economic disparities contribute to inequities in camp participation and related research on marginalized youth. Consequently, it is not clear what types of camping programs work best for marginalized youth. Purpose: To conduct a quasi-experimental comparison of three summer camps described as experiential education camp (EEC), recreational camp (RC…

  • Climate change impacts on peak building cooling energy demand in a coastal megacity

Open Access•Luis Ortiz, Jorge E Gonzalez et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2018

Buildings and the atmosphere are intrinsically connected via cooling and heating systems. Global climate is projected to grow warmer, with an increasing fraction of the population living in urban centers. This introduces the challenge for new approaches to project future energy demand changes in cities. In New York City (NYC), the focus of our study, while air conditioning only accounts for 9% of all building energy end use, it is the main driver…

Current and future trends in urbanization will have significant impacts on global climate. However, our collective understanding of the climate of urban areas remains deficient, which is mainly related to significant knowledge gaps in observations. The New York City Summer Heat Campaign was …
