  • Destructuring a shield to rebuild the history

Open Access•Morena Iorio, Valerio Graziani et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2025•References: 51

A painted wooden shield from the 16th century, commonly traced back to the famous Lepanto Battle (1571), was investigated by a multi‐analytical approach to identify its manufacturing process and shed light on its cultural provenance. The typology is coherent with both the Christian and Ottoman armies and does not allow for an attribution. Radiocarbon dated the shield to two time intervals (1470–1525, 1580–1625, at 68% level of probability), compa…

  • Domus Aurea , the ‘ Sala Delle Maschere ’

Open Access•Alessandra Paradisi, Armida Sodo et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2012•Cited by: 5•References: 5

In this paper, data collected from the wall fresco paintings of room 114, called the ‘ Sala delle maschere ’, of the Domus Aurea in Rome is analysed. The chemical composition of the efflorescence is investigated by infrared spectroscopy. The colour palette is determined by means of EDXRF, Raman spectroscopy and visible reflectance spectroscopy. EDXRF has allowed an extensive mapping of the elements present in the pigments and plaster; whilst in‐s…
