  • Nota introdutória a 'Antropologia em língua árabe: Para lá do monopólio discursivo' (Abdellah Hammoudi, 2018)

    Open Access•Francisco Freire•ARTICLE•Etnografica•2024

  • State, Society and Islam in the Western Regions of the Sahara: Regional Interactions and Social Change

Open Access•Francisco Freire•BOOK•State, Society and Islam in the…•2022

This open access book takes a deeper and broader perspective of the Hassaniya-speaking peoples’ struggle for self-determination in the Western Sahara. There has been a surge of interest in the Western Sahara, often centred around sensationalist news reports and policy briefs on these groups. But in-depth understanding and analysis remains neglected and little work has been undertaken on the diverse experiences of the Hassaniya and the contrasting…

  • Looters vs. Traitors: The Muqawama (“Resistance”) Narrative, and its Detractors, in Contemporary Mauritania

    Open Access•Elemine Ould Mohamed Baba, Francisco Freire•ARTICLE•African Studies Review•2020•Cited by: 2•References: 32

Since 2012, when broadcasting licenses were granted to various private television and radio stations in Mauritania, the controversy around the Battle of Um Tounsi (and Mauritania’s colonial past more generally) has grown substantially. One of the results of this unprecedented level of media freedom has been the propagation of views defending the Mauritanian resistance ( muqawama in Arabic) to French colonization. On the one hand, verbal and writt…

  • Weapons of the weak, and of the strong: Mauritanian foreign policy and the international dimensions of social activism

    Francisco Freire•ARTICLE•Foreign Policy in North Africa•2020•Cited by: 4•References: 19

This article examines the forms of interplay between the foreign policy of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania and the international standing recently gained by some of the country's socio-political activists. These different forms of political argumentation are affected by Mauritania's 'Islamic republic' label, which, adopted following independence in 1960, has been opportunistically used by the state and has become a double-edged sword when used…

  • The Hemeila Riddle: Genealogical Reconfigurations of Pre-colonial Encounters in Southwestern Mauritania

    Francisco Freire•ARTICLE•History and Anthropology•2017•Cited by: 2•References: 39

This article will focus on a seldom-considered aspect of Saharan social contexts: the incorporation of European/Christian characters into tribal sociopolitical frameworks. Supported by data from my fieldwork, I will discuss contemporary portrayals of a mid-seventeenth-century woman, Hemeila, whose mother is recognized as a European Christian of Iberian origin. These two women are presently incorporated in different genealogical narratives from So…

  • Poder e cultura nos iniciais encontros luso-saarianos: Apontamentos etnográficos do sudoeste da Mauritânia (Trarza) / Power and Culture in Early Luso-Saharan Encounters: Ethnographic Notes from Southw…

  • Saharan migrant camel herders: Znāga social status and the global age

    Open Access•Francisco Freire•ARTICLE•The Journal of Modern African…•2014•Cited by: 4•References: 70

In the late 20th century, 300 Mauritanian shepherds travelled to the United Arab Emirates in order to tend the herds of some of that country's most prominent leaders. These low-tech subjects of global migration flows were particularly valued and sought after by their Emirati employers for their expertise in raising camels. I analyse the forms and consequences of this migration, focusing on the reintegration of these shepherds into Mauritanian str…

  • The “Narziguas,” Forgotten Protagonists of Saharan History

    Francisco Freire•ARTICLE•Islamic Africa•2011•Cited by: 3•References: 6

This article discusses the processes leading to an almost complete exclusion of some populations native to the western Sahara from oral tradition and historical writing. I will consider the Arabization of this context and its implications in the formation of contemporary identities, when evidence suggests precisely their complexity and non-linearity. In order to assess this argument I will look attentively at a mid-sixteenth-century letter sent t…

  • Ghislaine Lydon, On Trans-Saharan Trails: Islamic Law, Trade Networks, and Cross-Cultural Exchange in Nineteenth Century Western Africa

    Open Access•Francisco Freire•ARTICLE•Etnografica•2010

    Open Access•Francisco Freire•ARTICLE•Etnografica•2005•References: 3
