  • The process of harmonizing competency-based curricula for medicine and nursing degree programmes

Doreen Mloka, Edith Tarimo et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Teacher•2023

In many low- and middle-income countries, there seems to be a mismatch between graduate skills and healthcare industry requirements due to variability in curricula. With the current increased global demand for competent health profession graduates, harmonizing competency-based curricula (CBC) is necessary to address this mismatch. This paper describes how three health professions training universities in Tanzania and their two long-standing Unite…

Aqueous ethanol (80%) extracts of six plants used traditionally for treatment of malaria, Vepris glomerata (F.Hoffm.) Engl (Rutaceae), Maranthus floribunda (Bak.) F.White (Chrysobalanaceae), Strophanthus eminii Asch. & Pax ex Pax (Apocynaceae), Cassia abbreviata Oliv. (Leguminosae) and Caesalpinia bonducella L. Fleming (Fabaceae) were screened for antimalarial activity to establish validity of their claims. The extracts exhibited antimalarial act…

Therapeutic claims made on plants used in traditional medicine in Katoro ward of Bukoba district are well supported by literature, with 47% of the claims having already been reported. This study further enhances the validity of plants used in traditional medicine in this region as resources that can be relied on to provide effective, accessible and affordable basic healthcare to the local communities. The plants documented also have the potential…

BACKGROUND: The Kagera region, in north western Tanzania, is endowed with a strong culture of traditional medicine that is well supported by a rich diversity of medicinal plants. However, most of the plants in this region have not been documented nor evaluated for safety and efficacy. As an initiative in that direction, this study documented the knowledge on medicinal plant use by traditional healers of Bugabo Ward in Bukoba District. METHODS: Ke…

  • Anticonvulsant Activity Of Diospyros fischeri Root Extracts

Open Access•Mainen J Moshi, MJ Moshi et al.•ARTICLE•African Journal of Traditional…•2008

Diospyros fischeri Gurke (Ebenaceae) is used in traditional medicine for the treatment of epilepsy. Dichloromethane, ethylacetate, and ethanol extracts of the roots, at doses between 100 and 1600 mg/kg BW, inhibited convulsions induced by the γ‐aminobutyric acid type A (GABAA) receptor antagonist, pentylenetetrazole (PTZ), in a dose dependent manner. The extracts also exhibited low toxicity against brine shrimps giving LC50 values between 45 .4 a…

  • Brine Shrimp Toxicity Evaluation Of Some Tanzanian Plants Used Traditionally For The Treatment Of Fungal Infections

Open Access•Mainen J Moshi, MJ Moshi et al.•ARTICLE•African Journal of Traditional…•2008

Plants which are used by traditional healers in Tanzania have been evaluated to obtain preliminary data of their toxicity using the brine shrimps test. The results indicate that 9 out of 44 plant species whose extracts were tested exhibited high toxicity with LC50 values below 20μg/ml. These include Aloe lateritia Engl. (Aloaceae) [19.1μg/ml], Cassia abbreviata Oliv. (Caesalpiniaceae) [12.7μg/ml], Croton scheffleri Pax (Euphorbiaceae) [13.7μg/ml]…

  • Isolation Of A Stilbene Glycoside And Other Constituents Of Terminalia sericeae

Open Access•CC Joseph, Mainen J Moshi et al.•ARTICLE•African Journal of Traditional…•2008

The ethanol extract of the root bark of Terminalia sericeae yielded an unreported stilbene glycoside, 3\'5\'-dihydroxy-4-(2-hydroxy-ethoxy) resveratrol-3-O-β-rutinoside (1) together with known compounds resveratrol-3-β-rutinoside glycoside (2), 3\',4,5\'-Trihydroxystilbene (resveratrol) (3), triterpenoic acid arjungenin and a mixture of β-sitosterol and stigmasterol. Structure determination of the isolated compounds was achieved on the basis of s…
