Solar-driven biosynthesis of chemicals from phosphite-rich wastewater and carbon dioxide
Cost-effectiveness of iGlarLixi vs. IDegAsp in individuals with type 2 diabetes
Background: This study aimed to evaluate the long-term cost-effectiveness of insulin glargine/lixisenatide injection (iGlarLixi) vs. insulin degludec/insulin aspart (IDegAsp) in individuals with poorly controlled type 2 diabetes in China. Methods: This study employed the Building, Relating, Assessing, and Validating Outcomes (BRAVO) diabetes model to simulate 20-year clinical and economic outcomes from the perspective of the Chinese healthcare sy…
The intersection of place and health
Diabetes is a leading cause of mortality globally and ranks as the eighth leading cause of death in the United States. Affecting approximately 8.9% of Americans, diabetes imposes a substantial public health burden. Florida lies within the “Diabetes Belt,” a region identified by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention where residents face an elevated risk of diabetes. Over the past two decades, the incidence of type 1 (T1D) and type 2 diabe…
Ethical reflection of Chinese scientists on the dual-use concerns of emerging medical biotechnology
Emerging medical biotechnology typically exhibits a ‘dual-use’ nature, which, while promoting human well-being, concurrently presents potential risks of misuse or abuse, thereby posing significant threats. Globally, including in China, emerging medical biotechnology is developing rapidly. To understand the views and perspectives of Chinese scientists on dual-use concerns, this empirical study conducted semistructured qualitative interviews with r…

Racial/Ethnic Disparities in Use of Angiotensin II Receptor Type 2/4 Stimulatory Vs. Inhibitory Antihypertensive Among Hypertensive Adults in the USA
Developing SWAT‐S to strengthen the soil erosion forecasting performance of the SWAT model
Soil erosion is an important cause of global land degradation, and accurate monitoring of it is essential. The Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT), a distributed hydrological model, is an advanced technique for predicting soil erosion at watershed scale. However, as the erosion framework was established in gently sloping land, SWAT is limited in predicting soil erosion in some highland and mountainous regions. Therefore, this study suggested a …
Completing the progression establishing an international baseline of primary, middle and secondary students’ views of scientific inquiry
Knowledge of scientific inquiry (SI) is considered essential to the development of an individual's Scientific Literacy (SL) and therefore, SI is included in many international science education reform documents. Two previous large scale international studies assessed the SI understandings of students entering middle school and secondary students at the end of their formal K-12 science education. The purpose of this international project was to us…

Changes and Clinical Significance of Pivka-II in Hepatitis E Patients
Increased protein induced by vitamin K absence or antagonist-II (PIVKA-II) levels had been widely reported in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and chronic hepatitis. However, the role of PIVKA-II in hepatitis E is unclear. The aim of this study was to clarify the changes related with PIVKA-II and its clinical significance in hepatitis E. We enrolled 84 patients with hepatitis E hospitalized in two hospitals from December 2019 to June …
Evaluation of the impact of the Gully Land Consolidation Project on runoff under extreme rainfall
Extreme rainfall is an important driver of soil erosion and land damage. The Gully Land Consolidation program (GLCP) was first launched in 2011 as a major land reclamation practice to increase farmland in the Loess Plateau of China. Studying the impact of artificial projects on hydrology can help humans to respond to the various water issues, but the assessment of the effects of the GLCP on extreme rainfall‐induced water runoff at watershed scale…
Income, Relative Deprivation and the Self-Rated Health of Older People in Urban and Rural China
Background: Substantial evidence indicated that absolute income is directly associated with health. Few studies have, however, examined if relative income may be equally associated with health. This study aimed to investigate the association between absolute income/relative deprivation (RD) and self-rated health (SRH). We also investigated whether the urban-rural difference was existing in these associations. Methods: Using cross-sectional data o…
Does the Encounter Type Matter When Defining Diabetes Complications in Electronic Health Records
BACKGROUND: Electronic health records (EHRs) and claims records are widely used in defining type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) complications across different types of health care encounters. OBJECTIVE: This study investigates whether using different EHR encounter types to define diabetes complications may lead to different results when examining associations between diabetes complications and their risk factors in patients with T2DM. RESEARCH DESIGN…
Estimating benefit equity of government health subsidy in healthcare Services in Shandong Province, China
The inequitable distribution of GHS in China exited in different healthcare services; however, the GHS benefit is generally progressive. Future healthcare reforms in China should not only focus on expanding the coverage, but also on improving the equity of distribution of healthcare benefits
An Approach to the Diagnosis of Craniofacial Fibrous Dysplasia from the 2500‐Year‐Old Remains of a Skull from Ancient China
A human skull, buried about 2500 years ago in a Bronze Age cemetery at Jinggouzi, a site of an important ethnic group in ancient China, appeared to have characteristics of fibrous dysplasia. The CT images indicated a reduction in bone density and relatively homogeneous lesions. More features were revealed using CT reconstruction techniques. Lesions seen in low‐magnification images using a 3D deep‐field microscope had an irregular honeycomb‐like s…
The impact of a bundled policy intervention on improving the performance of rural healthcare in China
This bundled policy intervention effectively improved rural health care delivery. The result of our study can be used for local governments to implement performance-based health system management in developing country
Disparities in 30-Day Readmissions After Total Hip Arthroplasty
BACKGROUND: Policymakers have expanded readmissions penalties to include elective total hip arthroplasties (THA), but little is known whether disparities exist on the basis of race, socioeconomic status, or payer. OBJECTIVE: To identify disparities in elective primary THA readmissions based on race, socioeconomic status, and type of insurance. RESEARCH DESIGN: This analysis is a retrospective cohort study of patients discharged for an elective TH…
