  • Phenomenological research in the field of Infant Mental Health and Early Childhood (IECMH) ‐A mapping review

Open Access•Minna Sorsa, Bente Dahl et al.•ARTICLE•Infant Mental Health Journal•2026

Infant Mental Health and Early Childhood (IECMH) is a field of study of infants and the developing relationship and the optimal development between infants and their caregivers. Phenomenological research within the well-being of infants and caregivers has core importance in the comprehension of the subjectivity of the infant and the attachment relationship. We aimed to explore and analyze, in a mapping review, how phenomenology has been used in I…

This study explores the emotional impact of unplanned removals of foster children on foster parents in Norway. • Empathy, Phenomenological Reduction, and Reflexivity

    Open Access•Idun Røseth•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2025•References: 12

Do our former experiences represent an obstacle to truly understanding another person? This study explores the phenomenological foundation that positions former experiences not as obstacles, but as essential preconditions for understanding the world and others. Drawing on Husserl’s theory of apperception, passive synthesis, intersubjectivity and empathy, I examine how past experiences inform both our present experiences and anticipated future, th…

  • Developing parenthood through giving birth to a dead child – bereaved lesbian mothers’ maternity care experiences in Scandinavia

Open Access•Idun Røseth, Dorte Hvidtjørn et al.•ARTICLE•Sexualities•2023

This phenomenological study uses in-depth interviews to explore how six lesbian couples experience the loss of a child in the perinatal period. Our findings revealed the importance of developing queer parenthood through a meaningful birthing space facilitated by a midwife and enabling time and space to recognize love and beauty in the couple’s grief.

  • No one needs to know! Medical abortion

Open Access•Idun Røseth, Eva Sommerseth et al.•ARTICLE•Health Care For Women International•2022

In 2021, 10,841 abortions were carried out in Norway, of which 95.3% were medical abortions. In this phenomenological study, we explore women's experiences connected to performing a medical abortion at home. We conducted 22 interviews and analyzed the data using Giorgi's descriptive phenomenological method. Our analysis revealed four crucial constituents: The logical and sensible choice-doubt beneath the surface; Secrecy and the dubious comfort o…

  • Fluid Boundaries and Moving Targets

Open Access•Idun Røseth, Halvor Austenå et al.•ARTICLE•SAGE Open•2020

In this study, we aim to understand midwife leaders’ perspectives on continuing professional education among midwives in their work unit. We used a phenomenological perspective and method in the process of interviewing the participants and analyzing the data. Five midwife leaders who worked in large maternity wards and had considerable experience as managers were recruited. Results revealed three essential constituents: (a) constraints and the in…

  • A Phenomenological Heuristic for Ecopsychology Research

Open Access•Idun Røseth, Rob Bongaardt et al.•ARTICLE•Ecopsychology•2020

The question of humans' lost connection with the natural environment appears more intimidating, relevant, and urgent than ever. How can the link between humans and the natural environment be re-established? In this article we underscore that phenomenology can offer a suitable and helpful perspective to answer this question. Ecophenomenological approaches have appropriated phenomenological philosophy to stress the importance of connecting with nat…

  • Hiking Leisure

Open Access•Rob Bongaardt, Idun Røseth et al.•ARTICLE•SAGE Open•2016

This study explores how hiking trips in the forest afford two Norwegian families experiences of leisure during the trips. In situ interviews were analyzed using a descriptive phenomenological research method, which brackets theoretical or ideological assumptions during data collection and analysis. The results show that three levels of experience are interwoven. First, individual family members, parents as well as children, are immersed in the ac…
