  • The unhealthy food environment does not modify the association between obesity and participation in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) in Los Angeles County

Open Access•M Pia Chaparro, Gail G Harrison et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2017

SNAP participation was associated with higher odds of obesity in our primarily Hispanic sample in Los Angeles County, with no effect modification found for the unhealthy portion of the food environment. More research is needed with additional food environment measures to confirm our null findings. Additional research is needed to elucidate the mechanisms linking SNAP participation and obesity as they remain unclear

  • Food Insecurity and Cost-Related Medication Underuse Among Nonelderly Adults in a Nationally Representative Sample

Dena Herman, Patience A Afulani et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2015•Cited by: 9•References: 33

Objectives. We investigated whether nonelderly US adults (aged 18–64 years) in food-insecure households are more likely to report cost-related medication underuse than the food-secure, and whether the relationship between food insecurity and cost-related medication underuse differs by gender, chronic disease, and health insurance status. Methods. We analyzed data from the 2011 and 2012 National Health Interview Survey (n = 67 539). We examined th…

  • Association between food assistance program participation and overweight

    Open Access•M Pia Chaparro, Antonio Bernabe-Ortiz et al.•ARTICLE•Revista de Saúde Pública•2014•Cited by: 3•References: 11

OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to investigate the association between food assistance program participation and overweight/obesity according to poverty level. METHODS A cross-sectional analysis of data from 46,217 non-pregnant and non-lactating women in Lima, Peru was conducted; these data were obtained from nationally representative surveys from the years 2003, 2004, 2006, and 2008-2010. The dependent variable was overweight/obesity, …

  • Effect of a Targeted Subsidy on Intake of Fruits and Vegetables Among Low-Income Women in the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children

Dena Herman, Dena R Herman et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2008•Cited by: 15•References: 13

Objectives. Intake of fruits and vegetables protects against several common chronic diseases, and low income is associated with lower intake. We tested the effectiveness of a subsidy for fruits and vegetables to the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC). Methods. Women who enrolled for postpartum services (n=602) at 3 WIC sites in Los Angeles were assigned to an intervention (farmers’ market or supermarket,…

  • Maternal Anemia and Postpartum Weight Change Associated With Decreased Maternal-Infant Interaction in a Rural Kenyan Population

RITA AZIZI-EGRARI, Rita Monireh Azizi-Egrari et al.•ARTICLE•Ecology of Food and Nutrition•2004

Associations between maternal nutritional factors including energy intake, body mass index, postpartum weight change, and anemia status and maternal-infant interactions were examined in 124 mother-infant pairs from a marginally malnourished, rural Kenyan population. Anemic mothers spent less time holding and caring for their infants than nonanemic mothers. Mothers who retained their pregnancy weight gain or were able to gain weight postpartum spe…

  • Anemia and Infection in School-Aged Egyptian Children

Donna M Winham, Gail G Harrison et al.•ARTICLE•Ecology of Food and Nutrition•2004

Iron-deficiency anemia and infection are deterrents to optimal child health in many developing countries. We investigated the prevalence of anemia and elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), which reflects chronic background infection, recent illness, and diet for 190 children aged 10 to 13 years in 1995 in a Nile Delta village. The children exhibited a high prevalence of anemia (61.6%) and elevated ESR (54.9%). One-third of the children r…

  • Psychosocial Correlates of Low Fruit and Vegetable Intake Among Adolescent Boys and Girls in Tehran, Iran

Nasrin Omidvar, Mahmood Ghazi-Tabatabaie et al.•ARTICLE•Ecology of Food and Nutrition•2003

This study examines the frequency of intake of fruits and vegetables among a sample of adolescents in the city of Tehran and the relationship of some behavioral, cognitive, personal, and environmental factors to low fruit and vegetable intake in this group. The study sample included 834 9th, 10th, and 11th grade student adolescents aged 14–19 years. The survey instrument was a structured self-administered questionnaire that consisted of several s…

  • Prevalence and functional correlates of obesity in an Egyptian village

Laura Kettel Khan, Gail G Harrison et al.•ARTICLE•Ecology of Food and Nutrition•1996

The objective of this analysis was to investigate obesity and its correlates in 147 men and 286 women 15 to 74 years from the Egyptian project of the Nutrition Collaborative Research Support Program (CRSP). According to National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS, 1983) standards for body mass index (BMI), nearly twice the proportion of women (25.1 and 10.1%) were overweight or obese compared to men (12.9 and 6.8%), using body mass index (BMI). A…

  • Dependability and precision of anthropometric measures in a longitudinal field study in an Egyptian village

Open Access•Gail G Harrison, Osman Galal et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•1991

Reliability and its components, precision and dependability, are analyzed for a complex dataset involving longitudinal anthropometric measurements on subjects of varying ages in an Egyptian village setting. Results are compared with other published datasets. Technical error of measurement is similar to or compares favorably with other datasets for both adults and children. Overall reliability is strongly influenced by dependability coefficients, …

  • Composition of egyptian home remedies for diarrhea

Mohamed I Hegazy, Mohamed Hegazy et al.•ARTICLE•Ecology of Food and Nutrition•1987

Diarrhea is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in Egypt, as in many developing countries. Oral rehydration therapy (ORT) has been shown to be effective for the treatment of dehydration which often occurs during diarrhea. However, malnutrition, a common side effect of diarrheal illness, cannot be prevented or treated by ORT alone; the food and fluids which the child receives during and following diarrhea will determine to a large extent the …

  • Primary Adult Lactase Deficiency

    Open Access•Gail G Harrison•ARTICLE•American Anthropologist•1975•Cited by: 10•References: 89

Most human populations manifest high prevalences of primary adult lactase deficiency. The most notable exception is that populations deriving from northern and western Europe show high rates of lactase sufficiency in adults. The evidence supporting hypotheses of physiological adaptation and genetic etiology of the trait is discussed, and possible areas for further research are suggested
